like, what all do you have to go through to get one (permit, registration, all that) and where would you go to get all this done?

Well, gee, that would depend on where you live. In Japan, very hard. In Arizona, pretty easy.

It is extremely diffucult...expect it to take 3-6months, or not at all, even. You will have to get permits, registration, bacround checks, the works. Its entirely possible that the law enforcement in your town just say "no".

notfred: I live in the US (South Carolina).

Anthrax: How can they say no if I have no bad record or anything like that? That doesn't make any sense.

I think they're a lot stricter now. Especially during these times.

Check your local classifieds sections in papers. Sometimes people just sell them in the paper, without issuing permits and whatnot. A couple people have done that, from what I've seen in the paper in recent past. They go quick though.

I don't what the hell you're talking about. In Minnesota, a fairly liberal state, I bought a gun within a week of filing for a permit.

Though I've never tried I never ever thought that it was difficult for a regular joe with no criminal record to get a handgun and 3-6 months sounds ludicrous.

It only takes a long time if you want to carry it. Just buying a handgun should take less than a week.

I bought one here in Utah at a gun show and walked out with it the same day. ;)

Also, here in MN for instance, you file for the permit with your local PD. Then once you have the permit it's good for one year and you can buy a hundred handguns if you want. So then as Amish said, you can go to a store or show, they'll process your license info, call the feds and whatnot, and you can have a gun in a couple hours.

Speaking of which, my permit expired not long ago. Oughta renew it, never know when I'm gonna run across a good deal. :)

In texas I can go into a store and walk out with a hand gun in 15 minutes.

Yup, that's what I did 3 months ago. They get on the phone with some sort of hotline setup by the FBI and verify that you don't have a criminal record. Thirty seconds later, you're out the door with a shiny new gun. At gun shows it's even easier (in any state, not just Texas). There are alot of redneck NRA rah-rah people that will quietly sell you one without any background checks of any kind.... they just don't advertise it to avoid being busted. Unless laws changed on 9-11, one private individual can sell a gun to another private individual with NO background checks at all. Which makes it easy for criminals to buy them, because then all you have to do is have a law abiding person purchase it, then sell it to the criminal "privately" (although this is called a "Straw Purchase" and is illegal if it was the intent of the initial purchase).

I think there is a disconnect here - Dismal is not asking about a concealed-carry permit. Only a handful of American jurisdictions (e.g., Chicago) make it tough to simply buy a handgun. As long as your background is clean you should be able to get one inside of a week.

Then you can probably pick one up at the 7/11, next to the Slim Jims.

It varies greatly here in America, it depends wholely on where you live. It's easier down south then in northern America.
