How good is a 256MB GeForce FX 5500?

Second the 9600XT recommendation. The FX cards are not worth it, the 5500 is barely faster than the 5200.

9600xt is slower than a 9700pro though 9600xt do overclock pretty well.

9600XT is pretty good compared to a 9700Pro... I believe FiringSquad has an article that compares a highly overclocked 9500Pro and 9600Pro (with clocks a 9600XT would attain relatively easy) to a 9700Pro... They do pretty well!
