How good does heat goo spreading have to be?

Hey all.

I'm RMAing a motherboard that wouldn't work after much hassle. It's my first build, but all my friends said, sounds like the motherboard. Anyway, I pull off the heatsink, and there, right in the middle of my lovely 3800+ X2, is a 1/8" diameter blob where the thermal material is missing. It came already attached to the heat sink, so I figured it would be fine.

My question is -- this board would usually not post, and when it did, CPU temps would be just under 50 C. Then it would hang a few seconds later, and then turn off. All possible peripherals disconnected.

Could that be caused by the tiny missing blob of goo in the middle? I could see it causing problems, but not that quickly.

Thanks. Take it easy.

It it was an original boxed amd cpu the original past that come pre applied on the heatsink is usually good for normally the first installation. If you had removed the heatsink you will have to reapply the paste. It should be spread evenly over the whole top of the chip, in a thin layer.

50C at boot is way too high for an x2 3800+. few things that I can think of offhand are
1) heatsink not fully seated, and locked down properly
2)the missing heatsink paste.

I always remove the original heat material and apply my own Artic Silver. If the heatsink wasn't seated or locked down, or the heat material was the problem, these can be fixed without an RMA, assuming that you never let the temperature get to hot. Whether either of these were responsible for the posting problem, I can't say. Another thing that could effect the temperature is if you have a defective fan on the CPU, but this could be determined in the bios, or with a diagnostic like SpeedFan.

The fan seemed good to me. It was spinning in a way that seemed reasonable and effective.

Went to Frys, and they were out of Arctic Silver 5. They had something that sounded like aluminum and some ceramic thing from arctic silver. I ended up getting Antec Silver 5. Clearly the name is a knock-off, but antec does some good stuff, so I hope this works.

50 C is high, eh? Well maybe I'll try reseating the heat sink before opening up another motherboard here. I'd rather my first motherboard work.

Well . . . no change with the old board. Time for USPS. Back to Newegg for the epox. :-(

However -- the Gigabyte is working pretty sweetly! CPU is 24C now -- sound better?

Gentlemen, I'm afraid you have a new Gigabyte fanboy on your hands (since I like my silent-pipe II Gigabyte video card too -- so far.) So everything else um . . . suxors, or something like that. Pwned, I believe? I'm not a very good fanboy.

Thanks y'all!
