How good do window units work?

They all work differently.

Ones with more BTUs cool more.
Ones with higher efficiency cost less to operate.

the 5000 BTU walmart brand ones usually suck.

A good 12000 or 18000 BTU energy star model should cool even a large room rather nicely ...

I think he means air conditioners. They work well so long as you don't expect them to cool more than they are rated for.

i think you mean "how well do they work".

I have an 8000 BTU unit in my room and it works wonderfully. i think my room is maybe 15'x15' or so.

My parents 2000 sq ft house in the Bay Area was cooled only by one window AC unit. True you needed to hang out in the living room on hot days, but with a fan in the hallway you can cool the rest of the house reasonably well.

So the answer is: Surprisingly good

Does a window AC bring in air from outside, or does it just cycle through air in the room and cool it. I'm asking because I want to know if a window AC is useful to replace stale air in the room with fresh air from outside.

As far as I know, they all just circulate the air that is already in the room.
