My friend's had quite a few problems with hers. The engine itself has been fine. Quite peppy for 4-cylinder and still gets great mileage. And the interior is kinda basic, but seems reasonably well put together. But she's had quite a few electrical problems as well as problems with the paint (and this is a garage-kept car in the South.) She loves the car, but after her recent experiences I don't think she's going to get another Beetle again.

The new VW Beetle is so cute! They have the flower holder, pretty colors and bulbous shape. It makes me want to smell the flower, roll down the window and blow chunks.

Our family owns 2 VW Passats... One Silver 2002 1.8 turbo (mine) and a Black 2001.5 1.8 turbo (my dads).

They are FANTASTIC CARS!!! We have had 0 problems since we got them over a year ago. Save your backseat passengers legs and get a Passat. :)

I am sorry but anytime I see a guy in one of those things I automatically assume he is on the way to a freeway rest stop.

"...they were good cars for their time..."

Back in "their time", American cars were more rugged than today's cars. Never could understand the appeal of those things. Very good friend of mine owned one. He thought it was teh sh|t! He said it was a poor man's Porsche. Took me for a ride in it, demonstrating his mad shifting skilz...

Still don't get it! Maybe it didn't help that I owned a '66 GTO at the time :p

My gf has a 2001 Beetle and loves the car but hates the headaches. Shes happy she got it but would not buy another one. The car is starting to develop alot of plastic rubbing sounds and things are rattling all the time now. Dealer can't figuire it out and shes had the dash pulled apart about three times trying to get the gremlins. The car was in six, count um, six times to try and get the stupid radio fixed. They figuired it out on the sixth time. The driver side seat is started to move around alot and makes this horrible squeaking noise. Dealer is going to look at it next time. Front license plate holder fell off two times. Turns out the dealer kept forgetting to install the screws to hold it into the bumper. Half of the techs at the place didn't even know it required screws. VW customer service has gone done the sh!tter. The side windows had to be adjusted after about 5K miles. Some regulator thing. Car started running rough last month and the dealer ended up replaced something with the turbo. These are off the top of my head. Theres been more but I just can't think of them right now. She is going to get rid of the car before the warrenty is up.

I have also had horry stories with VW and my 98 Jetta but I won't go into them now. In fact, I need to call the customer service back to see what the are going to do about there sucky service. Just had my ignition switch replace and when I got it back the stearing wheel was put back on crooked and the plastic housing behind the wheel wasn't put back on properly. Took it back and now the stearing wheel is aligned in the opposite direction. Can't they do a stupid alignment right. :|

I think alot of the customer service and service dept. is VERY dependant on the location and even down to the specific dealer. I have had no problems whatsoever with Gunther VW in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. I think their also the largest volume VW dealer in the nation if im not mistaken. I have heard horror stories about other dealerships as well though, but praises to many others.

Ya, my VW dealer sucks. VW still won't listen to the complaints about things they know are wrong with my series of Jettas. Door moldings, coil packs, ignition switches, ABS sensors are some of the problems alot of owners are having problems with. Talked to VW all the time and they give me the same excuse. Your care is too old. This is when it was 3 years old and only 35K on it. A car company that does this will not ever get me to buy a car from them again. Here's my list since I am on the subject.

4 door moldings; 1 @ 26K which was only 1K out of warrenty, 3 @ 50K, 1 @ 60K orginally repaced at 26K $150 each molding
2 coil packs; 45K, 55K 14 months after the first one $450 each pack
2 front ABS sensors 50K $100
ignition switch; 60K, still pissed at them because they screwed up the alignment two times now (see above post) $200
rear brake cables which eventually led to rear brakes and calipers 30K $500 total
Those are the major ones but I know there are more. Why do I always get pissed when I think about VW.

From what I have read these are very common problems with my model.

HA, I just got off the phone with VWoA and they told me to basically go f@ck myself.

me: I filed a complaint on the web. My case # is xxxxxxx.
her: What one minute will I look at the case file. Sir, we can't do anything because it is a workmanship issue with the dealer.
me: Well aren't you in charge of over seeing the quality of the work?
her: We only handle complaints about the product, not the work. You can file a complaint with your local state agency.
me: Do you have the number for them?
her: No, we do not carry those numbers.
me: What will you do about the complaint against the dealer?
her: We will file it.
me: Thanks, goodbye.

Never again will I buy another VW in my life.

sounds like what happened to us.

the cylinder / key thing wasnt working right, the dealer misdiagnosed the problem once, said they fixed it.. (covered under warranty) but a few months later, it had broke again.

by this time though, it was no longer under warranty, we called up VW and said that since they had admittedly misdiagnosed the problem originally, and failed to fix it while under warranty-- we were expecting them to fix it this time, correctly, under warranty.

they basically told us to 'go fsck ourselfs'

the girl I had lunch with last weekend drives a new bug. I asked her about it and she seems to like it and doesn't have any problems.

It's wierd, I hate VWs but now the girl I'm hitting it off with drives a bright yellow bug.:confused::confused::confused:
