NE has this on sale today... it looks like a pretty decent monitor at a decent price. I see people raving about Dells...

How would this monitor work for gaming and normal computer useage, say, compared to a like-spec Asus or Acer?

It varies from model to model. I have an old FP2001 that is still kicking. They tend to use Samsung panels quite often.

I personally wouldn't like that monitor, pixel pitch is to large but I can't speak for the "quality" of that model.

Depends on the monitor as imagoon says. The higher end Dells (with a higher end price) are usually great monitors while the lower end ones are about on par with an Asus, Acer, or other smaller brand. Dell has a very generous return policy which is another reason to go with them if you experience excessive backlight bleeding or if it has dead pixels. Finally, whether a monitor is great or not also depends on the usage. A gamer had different needs from a digital artist.

Yep, depends on monitor. We use a lot of them where I work. I have a 20" for my lanbox. I like it because it tilts and rotates so I can place it in a storage locker at work. Well enough to use for gaming. It is a TN panel though. I've had it for a few years now. Dell monitors are good but it depends on the model too.

Though I too am getting in the market for a new monitor, my Dell 2405FPW has held up pretty well over the... jeez... around 6 years I've had it now. The backlight is a little uneven after all these years, but it's still running. It was their top end model back when I got it. I'd seriously considering buying a high end Dell again based on my experience with this screen.

I think the HP ZR line is better these days because they're the only ones offered without an internal scalar which introduces MEGA LAG..

Most of the NEW dell monitors have a billion hookups and video connectors, but introduce up to 50ms of input lag.

For reference that's 3 whole frames of latency.

You add input lag, pixel response lag, usb latency, and something like triple buffering, and it's gonna be like 80-150ms, Gasp.. I feel faint'''

I don't know what Dell monitors you have been looking at but the last 2 generations of Ultrasharp monitors typically have input lag of <16ms.

Have a look at any credible monitor review and you can see the recent IPS models all have low input lag (both by IPS standards and LCD's in general).
I think the highest input lag monitor they released in recent times was the U2410 which had like 20-24ms lag in most modes and around 16 in game mode if I'm not mistaken. Hell even the big ass 30 inchers have acceptable input lag for all but the most sensitive folk.
The last really laggy Dell I can recall was the 2405 or was it the 2407?
Anyways you can't really go wrong with a U2312HM or U2412M.

Now don't get me wrong, the HP ZR line are also very nice monitors but the lack of a proper OSD could be a deterrent to some.
