How good are samsung drives compared to brands like maxtor and seagate? Are they reliable?

I've only dealt with a few Samsung drives, none of them were dead or having problems. They were all a couple of years old, worked fine. If they had problems like the 75 and 60 gxp's, or the current fujitsu problems, we'd know.

I've had good results from a variety of Samsung products. While usually not the very best, they've all been high quality and very reliable..... like this 753df monitor I'm using right now.

I certainly wouldn't hesitate to use a samsung hdd if the price was right.

Check storagereview.com to see how they stack up performance-wise.....

They are great drives, with great support, and still have a 3-year warranty. I've sold thousands over the years, they are as reliable as any. Very underappreciated brand, imho..

Unfortunately, of the 4 Samsung 40gb 7200rpm hd that we used this last quarter, 2 died within 6 hrs of install. Needless to say I won't be using any more samsung hds...

More than likely they were mishandled somewhere along the line.. A company couldn't survive as long as Samsung HDD's (I remember 850MB units) with a 50% failure rate.

Where can you actually buy these drives? Are they mainly oem? I've never seen these drives availible for sale anywhere.

BTW, how quiet are they in respect to a WD SE?

had a 40gb 5400rpm...after about a year of use, no problems...not stellar on the performance or anything, but....
as for noise - it was quite decently quiet.

Performance is average but its a pretty quiet drive. I've installed a lot of Samsung harddrives and so far not a single one had any problems.

The 3 year warranty is nice. A few of the larger manufacturers have cut their warranty to 1 year.

I am pretty sure that is a result of the distributor or whoever shipped to the distributor. The chances of your situation happening without some outside force is very small.

I've had a 20GB Samsung drive for a few months now; it has changed hands a little in the house - it was my secondary drive for awhile, but it is now doing just fine in my dad's PC.
