BBC has a calculator on their site

http://www.bbc.com/news/health-18770328

You have a lower BMI than 90% of males aged 30-44 in your country

That's using the USA as my country. And I'm 5kg overweight at the moment. Otherwise I'm at 95%.

More interesting though is that the USA is one of the fattest countries in the world. They list it as number 6. Everything else I have read puts us at number 1.

My point is that there is a cool calculator where you can compare how you're doing. As a side note between this thread and the other one I saw in this section regarding the average American man we have a serious obesity problem. Congratulations if you are not part of it.

Iv'e never been a fan of it myself but it was pretty cool to see the comparison stats. I did it and had a BMI of 63, after thinking this stupid thing is broken I realized I had it in KG not pounds smh.

Apparently i'm still quite overweight though and 1 point away from being obese regardless of muscle mass lol

To be fair for like 99% of people BMI is pretty accurate.

Obviously its not for the people who are into bodybuilding etc.

QFT, when I was getting BCBS insurance around in my 20's I was single digit bodyfat and around 195-205lbs at 5'10.5".

I believe it came back as morbidly obese.

I was able to get an exemption based on blood tests or something similar and got favorable rates.

How many people realistically fall into that category?

Enough that expecting it to be a valid way to measure anything is beyond stupid. This "lol Americans are all fat her derp" is stupid. America has a ton of athletes, a lot of which are BMI obese. Darren Sproles (NFL RB for the Philly Eagles) is 5'6 and weighs in around 205. I've seen pictures of him without his shirt. His 33+ BMI (that is very obese, btw) is complete BS. Lebron James @ 245? Overweight...

BMI Inaccurate for Other Populations As Well
A large-scale study young athletes ranging in age from 11 to 18 years old shows that it is not only very muscular individuals that are being classified as overweight by BMI. Nearly 34,000 student athletes in middle and high school in Georgia and Alabama were tested for BMI and body fat using a skinfold assessment. Results showed that BMI was highly inaccurate, with 62 percent of the students being falsely classified as obese by BMI.

One might assume that BMI could be used for people who actually are obese as measured by a 12-site skinfold assessment. Not so! A study of people who underwent bariatric surgery and lost significant body weight showed that there was a standard error ranging from 4 to 8 percent in measuring actual body composition changes using BMI. Researchers conclude BMI can not be used to assess body fat changes in the obese.

It's been touted as nearly worthless actually.

BMI is an outdated way to judge "how fat" a person is.

A more relevant measurement is one's FFMI. even that isn't perfect.

max... I fall into that category and i'm no athlete

I'm fairly sure that each way if measuring body fat has its weaknesses. That doesn't mean we should completely discount them.

People like to use athletes as an example if where it fails even though that has nothing to do with their own measurement.

Ditto to Zivic's last statement however I do get what you're saying though about most people.

I spent a little over two years away without going home to visit. The first thing I noticed when I came home was how fat we are. It's shocking. Its not something I was acutely aware of before but being away from America and then coming back I can assure you that we have a serious problem.

Its something I've discussed with my friends and family and they seem to be convinced it has something to do with our food. They're not even sure what to do with their kids but are trying to buy meat from small farms at least. Maybe it's the hormones and maybe it's not but something is different.

Its not confined to america either. In Europe the girls are starting their periods at 8 and 9 years old. Breasts are bigger. Something has changed.

Next time you're at the supermarket and see joe average waddling down the confectionery aisle, estimate his height and weight and tell me BMI dosent apply to that guy.

Its relevant for the general population IMO, for people its not relevant to, well they likely know it dosent apply to them anyway like some of you guys here.

The average weight in America male is 194. Now, the average height of a white male in the US is 5'10.5 and a black male is 5'10.

The "ideal" weight is supposed to be 30lbs under that. Is is beyond a skinny fat terrible body type. If you are 5'10 and weigh 160, you might are terrible looking.

Be careful, people will cry about using 10.5".

I state that as my height, because that's what my doctor tells me during my physicals. Here I think the Giraffe class gets too angry when a King of Manlet's evolves.

It's a range and not a specific weight. 194 is slightly fat but there's nothing wrong with 160.
