How fast would you guys run my CPU?

Summer is coming and SickBeast is frightened...
He needs to slow down his system so it doesn't overheat...

Here are my relevant specs:

ABIT NF7-S R2.0
1GB PC3200
ATHLON XP MOBILE 2500+
THERMALRIGHT SLK-800A

Oh yeah, keep in mind that I'm a pretty serious gamer, so I would like the best performance for my setup within reason. :beer:

Hey almost like mine ;-) Well I have to use 1.85 for 2500 or my prime dies after 5 min of running. I run at 2400, because I do not need that extra 100Mhz for now. Do you get unacceptable frame rates if you use 2400? If you do not, why use 2500?. Slow down and let your CPU relax a little.

Haha...CPU's can't relax silly.

In any event, I guess I don't notice much performance difference in gaming right now. I play UT2004 alot though, and I know it's very CPU-intensive in single-player mode.

But whatever, it's only 100mhz difference, maybe 4% performance boost if that. I think I'm going to stay at 2400mhz at 1.725v as it seems like a more reasonable "summer" voltage so my CPU can "relax". :beer:

If you could run 1.6V at 2300 mhz, thatd be swell, yeah you lose some performance from the 200 mhz drop from 2500, but the less heat production may make this worth it.

I have both a mobile Barton and a desktop 2500+. My 9 year old son runs the 2500+ at 1.79v for 2300MHz.

I have the 2400+ mobile that runs 2424MHz at 1.79v.

He doesn't mind the noise, an Allied 450-watt gives it plenty of power and 4 case fans and a TR2-M2 keeps it around 50c under full load.

I am a stickler about noise, I have actually dropped down to 1.62v @ 11 x 203 for 2233MHz. 5v mods on both 90mm fans and my TR2-M2 is slowed down to 3500 rpm's. Replaced my power supply with some old 250-watt server with a near silent fan. Micro-atx case, running 48C, except for our video cards, I can't tell a difference in performance.

I voted 2.5ghz at 1.825, assuming you get yourself a better heatsink. An SLK-900a or -947u would lower your temps considerably (although, obviously not drastically). Of course, you could get yourself a good cpu fan, also. Matter of fact, you can buy my 92mm Tornado!

Try doing this test. Put a space heater and turn it on in the room where the machine is to the point where it will be the hottest in your area while running prime95/cpu burn or some stress testing tool. I did that for my machine and the highest temp I got from the NF7-S (using Abit Hardware monitor) CPU(thermal probe I think): 56-57 Celcius and system temp were around 38-40 and my machine was still running ok with HSF fan spinning at around 4300-4500RPM.

On normal temps: cpu idle: 45 C cpu load: 50-52C will probably be higher when summer hot wave really hits.

1Gig OCZ perf 3200 2.7v (2.7-2.8 actual i think, nf7-s seems to be overvolting here)

I voted for 2500MHZ @ 1.825v unless you encounter stability issues with heat then 2400MHZ @ 1.725v and I'm sure your system will handle this, you've got a pretty good HSF there.

I said 1.725 @ 2400, but I think you should be able to get that voltage even lower and be 1.675 @ 2400. I dont know... 1.85v @ 2500 just seems like too much of a jump for 100 MHz. *shrug*

2.4 @ 1.725... a tenth of a volt is a little too much to gain just 100 MHz.

I'm going to keep running it at 2400mhz at 1.725v. I think the voltage is actually a fair bit lower than that; I hear the NF7-S undervolts.

As for the fan, no thanks, I already have a 92mm Delta that I'm happy with. :beer:

All you have to do is check it with motherboard monitor or CPUID or something like that.

i have the same mb/cpu and i found the sweet spot so to speak "lowest voltage ,highest speed,most stable,cool and quiet
200 x 111.5 @1.7 vcore will keep you in the upper 40s under load even a hot room
