How fast, on average, can a cavalry unit move?

I know they say the 7th Cavalry is just over 100 miles into Iraq, but that doesn't seem very far given the amount of time since they started. Even at 15 mph, it's still only about 20 hours to Baghdad. Anybody know what the average speed of a cav unit is, given stops for fueling, etc.?

They didn't even check line before telling me. Guess because they system is automated they don't want someone to schedule appointment for someone else for them to come out. Tank can do about 50 mph. But because of support vehicles they can't really get too far ahead of them. I would say they are near if not at the border of Baghdad right now giving the time when they entered Iraq.

They have not encountered any Iraqis to take prisoner. They're only now seeing Iraqi units, which is why they've stopped.

the cav races out ahead of the main divisions but its really only there to screen and perhaps clear up light resistance. once they're a couple hours ahead they move at the same rate as the regular infantry divisions

from reports on tv it seems the faster they go the better and more accurate the tanks can shoot

Yes they can but remember that support vehicles can break down and also support vehicles are the ones carry fuel. So they can really race really fare away

Huh? They've been encountering Iraqi units since 'day 1'... including small pockets of resistance, a group of tanks, different bunkers, many surrendering troops...

Not the 7th cav, unless I've completely fscked up on my facts. The units that encountered resistance were the Marines and British forces moving toward Basra that took the Faw peninsula.

The 7th Cavalry is part of the 3rd divison. The 3rd divison is in battle right now, and they came across minor resistence last night, they have taken 6 POWs, some Iraqi foot troops tried attacking a Bradley and were blown up by the small cannon the bradley has.

When they are moving they avg 35-40mph, but they stop often. They also have to refuel which takes 2 or so hours. They are alot farther in than 100 miles. They had moved 100 miles by yesterday morning, they were on the move much of the time. But like I said they stop, and go, stop, and go. Plus now they are in battle.

Like someone said earlier, you can't outrun the fuel trucks. If that weren't the case the tank crews would be ripping out their governors.

Edit: and I HIGHLY doubt that tanks "shoot better when they're moving faster". Probably another statement made by the ignorant media.

Max speed for an M1A1 Abrams Tank is ~53mph. In the desert they are going around ~35-40mph max. They can't get too far ahead of the supply train as someone else has mentioned. Throw in fuel stops and having to proceed cautiously at every ridge and/or rise in the terrain and that means their progress is slowed.

Keep in mind however, that this is probably the fastest moving assault ever. Even faster than Desert Storm. Plus, the fact that there are reporters along for the ride sending instant video feed is unprecedented. Now go back to WWI or WWII where any news on the fronts made it back weeks later and you'll realize that the current state of the war is simply amazing.

They havent even gotten to the river yet. There will be a huge battle before they do. They are probably close to getting to that point where they can cross, but like I said, there will be a huge battle. Theres two republican guard divisons waiting for them on the other side of the bridges.
