How Fast Is Your Cable Connection??

The microsoft test is very inaccurrate, try this one DSLreportsSpeedtest
I got 3816 kbps down/ 520kbps up, at least 76 times faster than a modem

ALSO: do not run the test two times in a row without clearing out your browsers cache

my connection was fast a year ago, but Road Runner has just completely maxxed out their nodes, which is why they suck and so does cable modem

Those speed tests are worthless... if there is a bottleneck ANYWHERE b/w their server and you then the results are NOT accurate.

Your download speed : 2386780 bps, or 2386 kbps.
Browsers would show : about a 291.3 k/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 274072 bps, or 274 kbps.
Your connection rocks .. above the 1mbit barrier!

🙂 sounds right to me.

My AT&T@Home cable modem connection (untweaked):

2607 Down
810 Up

It's worth noting that a coworker who lives in my node has a different cable modem and achieves the same download, but much slower upload speeds (about half my speed). I have an RCA and he has a GE.

And whether or not the results are accurate, it's not a bad way to test your connection. In theory you really want to test the speed to the gateway to really determine your total bandwidth, but in reality you are going to be accessing websites and FTP servers and not downloading from your gateway and so testing your speed to a fast website (like Microsoft) is a decent way to test your bandwidth in my mind.

1st test:
Your download speed : 622300 bps, or 622 kbps.
Browsers would show : about a 75.9 k/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 784108 bps, or 784 kbps.

2nd test:
Your download speed : 616635 bps, or 616 kbps.
Browsers would show : about a 75.2 k/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 805369 bps, or 805 kbps.
Your upload speed is much faster than down.. have you tweaked?

3rd test:
Your download speed : 631601 bps, or 631 kbps.
Browsers would show : about a 77 k/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 842696 bps, or 842 kbps.
Your upload speed is much faster than down.. have you tweaked?

This is at the office - T1 I think.

I got this once but speed is relative to cache and bottlenecks. even if you have a T3 or OC192 and the other sites have bottlenecks you won't get more than a 56K modem. but anything over 200K Bytes/s if fine for me.

I don't trust the speed they said I have. I've downloded files up to 230KB/sec. from some places, while the dslreports.com said I'm at about 174KB/sec.

I just downloaded a 91MB demo from cdrom.com in 2min 45sec:

10kB/sec up
549.3kB/sec down

That's with AT&T@Home in the Bay Area; a Motorola CyberSurfer Wave; uploads capped at 128kbps; at 12:45 p.m. PST.

Gotta make up for years of pathetic 30666bps dial-up. 😀

I'm on a PPPoE DSL and get around ~500 Kbps.

I need a faster connection but apartment life is so much better than dorm life.
