I don't mind the HD noise;) How much are the LM's compared to the AS's and where can I get them?

Well, it looks like Buy.com has ditched their coupons :( Anyway, Staples.com has the 30GB Quantum AS for $139 - $30 online coupon = $109. Then apply the $30 MIR and you get $79. You can't beat that! I can get two for a little over the cost of a 75GXP :D

It just doesnt seem worthwhile to me throwing away double the money for a little bit of performance difference.

What do you mean by that? It's no hype that the IBM is an brilliant performer, but thanks to Storagereview, the Fireball Plus AS is portrayed as a POS.

Lxi,

It's a good thing you're not buying those drives then.;)

It's Brandon's choice if he wants to get those drives, besides it will not cost him much since he's selling the old ones.

I was referring to the proposed RAID'ing that will do little for performance, Lxi, not the IBM's.

I had the exact same choice a month ago, a 40GB Fireball AS for $115 and a 45GB 75GXP for $160, I went Quantum.

Oh I see, either way the extra cost doesnt justify the performance difference. Im indifferent when it comes to RAID.

I think i will do the exact same thing myself,I now have 2 5400 drives in raid & while it's good & fast it doesnt really impress me all that much.

I think i will sell my 2 20gig hd's & buy myself a single 40 gig speedy Quantum AS.

Same thing Lxi,they are very fast for a 5400 drive, but the Raid0 hype is over for me.I dont need raid0 for playing games. :)

IDE RAID has never been anything but a bunch of bogus crap to me, if I ever buy a motherboard with an IDE RAID controller, I'll be just using them as extra IDE ports.

What's MIR and where can I find the online coupons?

Thanks!

Well, I'm committed to RAID if it'll work...the drives that I have now don't seem to hip to RAID-0, but hopefully the Quantums will be.

For example, most people were seeing doubled Sandra scores with a RAID-0 config. My scores went from a lousy 10500 with a single Expert to an equally lousy 13200 in a RAID-0 config. Now it's gotta be those drives. Hell, a single ATA66 drive was showing up at 15000 or somewhere around there. Even my HD-Tach numbers weren't up to snuff.

With these Quantums being so cheap, I don't mind trying again. And I'd have 60GB of space to play around with ;)

Word of warning. Back in August of 2000 I purchased two Quantum LMs for my work and sent in the mail-in-rebate. My boss e-mailed me one week ago...it was a forwarded e-mail from Quantum saying they got our rebate request and we could expect a refund in 8 weeks! That's pretty slow!

What sucks ass? Which company's rebate policy doesn't take more than 8 weeks?

Did you read what he said? He sent off the rebate in AUGUST!!! He has to wait ANOTHER 8 weeks from now!

I bought my Iomega ZipCD 12/10/32 on Dec 31st. I had the $30 rebate check in hand by the 24th.

Ok, so you bought it on Jan 31 and got your rebate a week before you bought it? As far as I know its not Feb 24 yet.

I meant to say that I bought it on Dec 31st...I got the rebate on Jan 24th. I got it when there was the big craze on the forums about the drive. It came down to like $129 after instant rebate, then there was the $30 MIR on top of that.

NFS4 with all the money you're putting into raid you could almost go hm....SCSI? But you don't care about those few extra seconds of performance...which is why you're buying two new IDE drives for a RAID setup? Ahem, what would Modus say? ;)

Hi, you CANNOT buy these drives from Staples and get the rebate. The page that links to the rebate is here:
http://www.quantum.com/quantum/promos/fbplus_as_rebate.htm

The places it lists that you can buy from are the Quantum Online Store, Buy.com, CDW, Club Mac/Pacific Business Systems, Creative Computers, Outpost, Insight, Megahaus, Micro Warehouse, Multiple Zones, NECX, Egghead, PC Connection, Fry?s Electronics.

Just an FYI. It would not be good to be refused the rebate.
