How fast is Raid 0 with 5400RPM Drives?? Recommended??

Can somebody post relative performance levels for:
Raid-0 7200rpm drives
Raid-0 5400rpm drives
Single 7200 drive
Single 5400 drive

With Mobos coming with Raid on board, is it still worth the extra money for two 7200rpm drives when much larger capacity can be had at 5400?

If not, any recommendation of brand/model? I have a Maxtor(?) 5400rpm 45 GB drive that takes its 2 second coffee breaks whenever I work it hard - not to good for the video capture rig I am building.

RAID0 does not help Seek time. And for mose peoples use Seek time is more important than transfer rate (which is all RAID0 helps).

7200rpm drives have better seek time than 5400rpm drives even if the 5400rpm is in RAID0.

IDE RAID uses a bit of CPU time but it probably won't kill you with CPUs as fast as they are now, so 7200rpm RAID0 might work out, but I'd take a single fast 7200rpm drive over a 5400rpm RAID0.

For video capture STR might be important, depends on what resolution you capture at. But I would still want the seek time of 7200rpm drive.

If you are serious about it get a 10k RPM SCSI drive. That would rock both.

For IDE I'd use IBM 75GXPs. The Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 45 and 60 are good to, but as a personal preference IBM.

- Raid 72
- Raid 54
- Single 72
- Single 54

Mixed access wise.
- Raid 72
- Single 72
- Raid 54
- Single 54




 
I had a 2x5400rpm drive setup with Raid 0.

I am much happier with a Single 7200 rpm drive,seek times are much faster & overall the system feeels much faster than my 5400 raid 0 setup did.

I say get yourself a single Fast 7200 rpm drive & dont bother with IDE raid.

no i came across this post searching for read/write speeds for 2 5400 rpm drives in raid 0 and saw how old insanely old this post is, and saw when he posted this. thought it was cool.
 
I think I pretty much agree with InvasiveDoc

I would add though that the numbers for actual mb / sec you see on drives could vary vastly depending on what you are using. An old 80gb 5400 drive vs a newer 1TB 7200 drive would be night and day. Like probably around 30-40mb/s vs 120+

From my experience even newer 7200 rpm drives can sometimes not be as fast as one would expect while others are very relatively fast. I would say look at number on specific drive models for individual drives to make your decision.

There is a really good site that has lots of individual drive benchmarks averaged by real world folks but I can't remember the name of it atm, I've used it a lot in the past to compare drives though.
