How fast is my 7900GT compared to newer cards?

I don't really game (used to, but a while ago I bought Half-Life 2 1st pack after the main game and haven't played it yet), but I was wondering how fast my card is compared to newer cards. Is there a review which would include an older card like this one?

If all you're going to play is HL2 (Source Engine), then you will be more than fine with that GPU. What's the rest of the system? Is it the one on the sig? Source is a little more CPU dependent than anything else, but even on a P4 3Ghz, you will always be above 40 FPS with everything maxed out.

Wow, my card is slow :) I always used to have 2nd or 3rd best GPU and CPU, oh my how times have changed. But like Modular said, I'll be good for HL2 games. Hopefully I'll fire it up one of these days! Thanks for the links Flipped Gazelle!

Well, the 3850 kicks the crap out of the 7900GTX. That should give you an idea of how far cards have progressed since yours was made. But yeah, for HL2 & derivatives it should be fine, they really worked to optimize those games to run on old hardware (plus those games are a few years old now too).

No. And I'd go with the Q8300 or Q9400, not Q6600.

I cant believe you just asked that.

its not even close. just one core on that Q6600 would run rings around the highest clocked P4 ever made.

Thanks guys :) One more question - I have Arctic Silver II here from when I used to be on top of these things. Does it ever expire or can I safely use it?

It can separate a little bit in the tube, but it'll be fine. Just mix it up before you apply.

some of those benchmarks are also with an i7 at 3.6 cpu so he wouldnt even get close those good of numbers with a single core P4.

thats a pretty demanding mod in the HL 2 Ep2 benchmark though so the plain game would run better.

That wasn't the point...

then what was the point?

He asked the question about how his card would perform relative to today's current cards and I posted benchmarks with how the card would perform across several different games. Saying the regular HL2 game would run better is moot, since it will run better on every card anyway. The point was not that he would achieve those absolute numbers. Also, good lucking finding benchmarks with the latest cards paired with a low-end processor anyway. I didn't like the fact you were trying to belittle my reply.

The netburst P4 will be too much of a bottleneck if you move up too much with GPU power. The most I would go with on your system would be an HD4850 or 9800GTX - with transitioning to a new Intel/AMD system later in mind. HD4850 or 9800GTX would still get you much better sustained FPS I believe and high spiked FPS in areas where maps are high concentrated.

someone is a little touchy. I wasnt trying to belittle your comment at all. I made two simple points. the first was that HL 2 link was not the actual game and was just a much more demanding mod. second I was just following up on your link by saying that his performance would be even worse since he has really slow cpu too.

I had an X1950 Pro 512mb which is comparable to your video card. Compared to a HD4850 I'd say it's about half as fast. Also, turning AA on for the HD4850 impacts performance much less than it would for your current one. The most important thing is probably what resolution you play at. If you're playing at 1280x1024 in HL2 engines I'd say you're fine. But if you want to play at 1680x1050 or even 1920x1200 or if you want AA on then you're due for an upgrade.

1 Vote for the Q8300.

(the Q8200 is cheaper though and OC's alright)

...7900GT... "snicker snicker"... (points gleefully)...

Sorry, I'm just kidding. HL2 is roughly in line with that card, but the 7900GT is superannuated now. Even 9600GTs eat it for lunch. I'd recommend that as an inexpensive upgrade, I just did it with my Athlon X2 4800+ unit and it was a BIG improvement. Dead quiet too.

Nice to see my 3870 still doing ok. Havent actually used it in over a year, but nice to know if I ever get back into PC gaming it'll handle most stuff.
