I was considering getting a laptop for long trips and decided to look at bench marks to compare price/perf vs desktop.

After seeing the benchmarks I though something might be wrong.

intel core i7 3960X 3.3ghz vs intel core i 7 3720QM 2.6ghz

h.264 first pass
desktop/ mobile 107.4 / 101.58

h.264 2nd pass
desktop/ mobile 53.1 / 46.97

cinebench 11.5
single thread
desktop/ mobile 1.57/ 1.49

cb 11.5 multi
desktop/ mobile 10.52/ 6.84

I don't get how a 45 watt chip can come so close to a 130w chip so I am a bit confused by the numbers I am seeing.I figured desktop was a lot faster then mobile. Unless they use different settings for mobile benches.

So is mobile just as fast as desktop?

The i7 3720QM can turbo up to 3.6GHz. So in single threaded situations it will be be quite comparable to a desktop chip.

Notice how the multithreaded benchmark does not look so good for the mobile chip.

Ivy bridge has closed the gap significantly
wow so mobile ivb is the way to go.

edit: But the 3960X can turbo to 3.9. In multi the mobile is a x4 vs a desktop x6 that's why there is a gap.

My bad I thought the pass mark bench you posted was a h.264 but its not. pass mark is lower because the score is comprised of a bunch of tests. which means it is almost as fast as the desktop x6 in some areas and not so fast in others.
