How fast do you drive?

How fast do you normally drive?

Probably varies with state enforcement too. In Michigan cops are pretty lax about speeding tickets so anyone still going the speed limit is clearly a jerk

Currently in the Dominican Republic and i rarely get to go faster than 75km/46 mile while dodging motoconchos , back home in Ontario it's almost always 15 km over the speed limit except for in the city where it's the speed limit usually. I've never been stopped for speeding under 20km over the limit in over 25 years.

I'm not even aware what the speed limit is here in the DR as i've yet to see a speed sign here since October.

My daily commute is 95% the long island expressway. I *think* the speed limit is 55, but you'd get run over if you followed that. Average is probably 70 assuming normal weather conditions. All cops care about is the HOV lane laws or if you're on your phone.

I've got better things to do with my money than pay speeding citations, plus I've seen way to many dead folks at wrecks. I drive no faster than what I feel safe, generally that's the speed limit in town and the speed limit +5mph on the highway.

Drivers who don't take safety seriously are worse than jerks. Of course, that means something very different where I live now out in the sticks, and the freeways of Southern California where I spent most of my life.

It's not a certain amount over. It's more just a function of what traffic is doing. On the interstate I rarely do more than 5-7 over unless most traffic is going much faster than that. But going through major metro areas (like I-74 through Indianapolis) the posted speed may be 55MPH but traffic is doing 70. I'll do 70 just to stay with the flow. If I'm all by myself on a road I drive more conservative since there is no one else to share the ticket with.

Between -5 & -10. My daily commute has a number of photo radar stations which kill traffic flow as they are very trigger happy at the slightest speed increase.

+1 for audio books is all I can say... and I'll be a first candidate for a driverless car, seriously boring drive...

While in Michigan, I also am not interested in tickets. On secondary roads I drive the limit. If anyone behind me is unhappy with that, they are free to pass me. On the E-Way, I typically stay in the right lane and do the speed limit to 2 to 3 over, max unless traffic is doing 70 in a posted 55. I'll keep up with traffic in those cases. I'm retired and decided a long time ago that arriving at my destination 45 seconds earlier doesn't make a whole lot of difference. Generally, cops as a whole are cool with five over but anything over that is a crap shoot.

In Florida, with out of state plates I have a target on my back. This, combined with the absolutely most insane driving I have ever witnessed makes what speed to drive tough to determine. It is not at all uncommon to be driving 60 in a 55 and have somebody weaving in and out of the lanes going 80 to 90. I see it multiple times everyday. Red lights that just turned are run through about as much as in Michigan. What's strange is that we live in an area with a lot of elderly but what are considered to be elderly driving habits (very slow and unsure) are not something we experience.

Of course there're many factors involved, but traditionally, I follow the rule that exists in many places I've been (maybe nationally?), that hits you with a suspended license if you're convicted of going more than 15 over the limit and faster than 55mph. So in clear conditions, I go exactly 14 over, but will go faster should the need to pass arise. My commute is a pretty wide open road with an impassable train yard on one side (so no side streets on that side).

Residential areas, though, I won't go over the limit, period. On streets with side parking where I kid or animal could jump out, I'll do as little as 20mph even though the city limit is 30.

on the highway 5-10 over until i find a truck to follow ( not closely, i just like something constant in view )
city streets whatever the speed limit is

I don't really commute so if i'm driving it's often on work time going to a client, so no reason to rush. I drive 65, the speed limit, in the right lane. If i'm driving on a road trip or something I'll do 5 over.

Not very. It doesn't feel necessary in a roadster, as you get a better sensation of speed the lower and closer to the ground you are. Going around corners at or under the speed limit is more fun than straight line speed, and the straight line speed doesn't need to be all that high for it to be fun to drive (especially with the top down).

Speeding doesn't really get me anywhere faster by more than a few minutes, so I don't usually don't exceed the limit by more than a few MPH unless I feel like I need to because of traffic flow (and even then it's more in bursts, not sustained).

Also I spend a lot of time listening to podcasts and music during my commute, so I'm not really bothered about the drive time. Most of my driving is at night and in the opposite direction of people commuting into/out of the city, so I don't have to deal with much traffic normally.

There are a ton of police here on the highways and local roads, too. Anytime I think I might enjoy going a little faster, I see someone already pulled over or a police car lying in wait.

I'd say +10 on average these days. Although often set my cruise at +8. Have stared at many a cops as I pass and have never had them chase me down in multiple states. Hate it when people slam on their brakes to the speed limit or less when they spot a trooper.

Up until age ~25, it was 15+ at all times DGAF. That got expensive tho.

I set the cruise for 72 on the freeway. You can go faster or slower than me, I don't care. I am going to do my 72. I will pull over for you if you are going faster than me and I will go around you if you are going slower than me.

WOW that sounds crotchity, I need my first sip of coffee I guess.

I try to never go more than 20% over the limit. I don't always drive at 20% over, but never more than that.

On a highway? Depends on how well staffed highway patrol is and traffic conditions. I tend to stay close to flow of traffic but if roads are clear I'm usually zipping along over the speed limit. Anywhere from 10 over to 120 over depending on time of day and traffic.

Around town? Within normal flow of traffic. Generally no higher than 10 over speed limit.

Residential side streets? Speed limit and under. In my area, streets are tight, unmarked with no sidewalks.

Always fun to watch the rage you can generate in other drivers by driving 55 mph in the right hand lane on the LIE out in Nassau\Suffolk.

Posted speed limit out in Nassau and Suffolk is 55mph. Drops down to 50 once you get into Queens.
Considering NYC driver skill and conditions of the LIE out in Queens, 50 is about right.

The farther you head out east (excluding speed trap areas) the higher the flow of traffic.
Early weekend morning weekend, 80 seems to be the flow of traffic for the middle lane out in Suffolk.
Always nice to be passed with the cruise control set to 85mph. Let that guy lure out the highway patrol and get the ticket.
The LIE turns into the Nurburging right before dawn on Sunday. All the guys heading out to the various car meets tend to use that time for Italian tuneups.

Conditions permitting, I'm almost always doing +5 or a couple MPH less. On the freeway I'm usually doing 78, conditions permitting of course. I've been driving for 18 years and haven't been pulled over once.

I do get a chuckle out of the dumbasses on the freeway that slam on their breaks when they see a cop, even though they're doing 70 or 72 or something. Wtf? I just carry on doing 78 and have no issue. It's not like these people are speeding... it's hilarious.

Have a Valentine One, so I can go any speed I'd like, but usually stick to a max of 15mph over
(which most everyone in DFW seem to do anyway).

Only speeding ticket I've ever received was from a smalltown (Ames, IA) cop for going +5 in a 25mph
(and that was right from a long stretch of 35mph).

Speed limit plus five generally for a couple reasons: (1) I've discussed this with several police officers over the years and all have basically told me they rarely ticket anyone for that and (2) I don't want to be run over by everyone else on the road.

One other thing I've noticed. Frequently I'm on the road most of the day. Consistently I've found that during the rush hour driver speed goes up roughly an additional 10-15 mph. Commuters are generally speaking crazy drivers.

NY highways are 55mph. Yeah right. You can easily go safely at 65mph. I find myself at 67-71 most times, and that's based on my feeling of safety in conjunction with flow of traffic, not considering anything else. In other words, most people do the same.

When I'm traveling outside my comfort areas, I'm still with the flow of traffic. If no other traffic, I reluctantly keep it no higher than 7+.

I got ticketed on the 50mph straight-as-a-drag-strip Clearview once (I was passing in the left lane) for "75". I still didn't feel it was excessive - safety-wise, but the cop talked to me like I was insane seeing I had 2 toddlers in the car too. 2 minutes before that, everyone was doing 70+ on the LIE. He didn't even catch me on the gun - but my traffic lawyer said it doesn't matter (are they in cahoots or what?) - he was able to lower the ticket but the cost after everything was almost the same. It was about the principle of the matter. Caught for exactly 25mph over? What a coincidence.

I honestly don't know why city highways are so low - perhaps because of merging traffic coming in and going out to surface streets and traffic lights. These days you have to watch out for speed cams right off highways in the city.
