Spreading thermal paste??? I won't even add a timeframe for that one since noone builds a system without adding thermal paste anyways. If you need to put a time on it... I dunno... 10 seconds or so.

i was really paranoid about spreading the thermal paste and it took a few minutes til i was somewhat satisified with it. so it can be a factor.

It takes a good hour because I like to make the wires nice and tidy, but to slop everything together takes less than half an hour...nuf said

Under an hour to get it all put together.

Days if not weeks to get it tweaked just right, find all the work arounds for any little bugs and OC it. 🙂

My last experience:

I built it in 20 minutes.

Spent the next three days trying to figure out why it would not be stable no matter what I did. I took the RAM out, tried some other and found it was still not stable. Put the RAM in another machine, found that crashed it. I had fubared RAM and a mobo. RMAed those.

Monarch screwed me and made me wait over a week for RAM they said was in stock, but was not. Canceled my order and got it from Newegg

Finally get my new RAM and mobo. Install everything and it all works.

Then I spend another week OCing and tweaking settings until just right.

I finally declared it finished yesterday.

This all started in late November.

So, in reality? About a month!

Putting together the hardware might only take an hour, but installing the software, checking for compatibility issues, bugs, updates, and ironing out all the bugs, and optimizing for performance takes a lot longer than that.

Uh oh. It takes me 1-2 hours to do a nice job of putting it together, but i start using it with about 15-20 minutes of installing software. Something must be wrong.

Takes me anywhere from 20min-3hours. I got a new case for my dads comp (had to reasemble it) and that took almost 20min< but when i made my rig i had alot more to do. I had to figure out how to RAID0 my SATA drives and play with the jumpers (on SATA drives) so it would boot right, i had 3HDs to install bleh bleh it was a big build with stuff i never worked with before so that took me a good 3hours. Plus it being with expensive parts so i took my time.

i really didnt know what i was doing when i built mine so i took my time... i bet i could do it the next time (second time) in about 2 hours... after that it would just keep getting faster and faster

hour less to put the system together
a day to install:
windows
tweaks
software
tweaks
more tweaks

load files.

hardware 30 min?
software an hour or two (depending how comprehensive i am)

yes, those stupid usb/power/etc headers are bastards

I rarely buy an entirely new system all at once. I usually buy mostly new components then swap back and forth so it takes quite a while sometimes.

Then there's software. That usually takes me at least 3 days. Gotta partition and such, install/update/patch XP, drivers etc etc. Then do a gentoo install from scratch.

I take a little more than an hour getting all the hardware together. If it's an upgrade, I'll take my time with the compressed air to try and give it all a thorough cleaning. I go slow with the thermal paste application, about 15 minutes. What gets me is cable management. with 6+ devices, I like to get in there and use zip ties for the power cables, getting all the fan headers routed so they don't show in the window. I really take my time witt SW install because it's so boring. I'll sit at my comp and forget to keep working on the other one 🙂

I use to work for a shop that built basic systems for school and businesses (Hundreds at a time). If they all had the same hardware in them I could knock one out in 20 minutes up and running with the OS on it (all the drives were loaded with the OS/Drivers and other software). We'd get paid between 15 and 20 dollars a system so we'd bust ass doing it. The most important aspect of building a System fast was the Case and how it was laid out. If it was roomy and well laid out the faster the build would go. Taking time out to get bandages or going to the hospital for severe gashes to the hands and fingers always slowed us down🙂 After a year of doing that building Computers kind of lost it's appeal to me.

Less than a couple of hours, probably an hour and a half, but I take my time and usually read at least a little bit of the manual for the mobo. If I was in a hurry I'm sure I could build one in 20 - 30 minutes no problem. What takes me so friggin long is installing and tweaking the OS, installing updates, and configuring software; that takes me days; hell, if I reformat I'm looking at a couple of days before I can say I've finished with the re-install of the software.

If I just wanted it thrown together? 30-60 minutes.

If I want a nice system with routed cables, good airflow, quiet fans, etc.? 1-3 hours.

If I feel like speed building it, I'd have it running w/ the OS installed in about an hour, hour and a half. The hardware would be assembled in 5-10 minutes to POST depending on the complexity. (my system w/ 3 SCSI optical drives and half a dozen cards takes longer than most). Generally, it's dependant on however fast I feel like doing it.
