how fast could you overclock an xp2400 tbred? UPDATE: found new bios, currently at 2.2ghz

on a k7s5a(v1) mobo? I recently picked up a new chip and wondered if its worth playing with.

UPDATE 3-13-04: Found a good third party bios for the board at ocworkbench

now running at 2.2ghz...not bad

~1.0ghz is going to be all you can get with that chip on a K7S5A, I would betcha. These chips start out at a 6x multiplier, and they have to be raised manually by using the bios. But, since the bios on that board won't let you change the multi, you'd have to run it at 6x166fsb, or 996mhz. Of course, you could always try it, even if it's just to prove me wrong.

the amd 1.0 chip I am running right now is oc'ed to 1.33

That's because it doesn't have a non-adjustable multi of 6x.

edit: I just remembered that I downloaded a program called SpeedFan. It has LOTS of features, and one of them is being able to access overclocking features not available in the bios on just a couple of motherboards, but one of them is the K7S5A. I have no idea what capabilities it has, because my motherboard isn't any of the supported motherboards. Here's a link to it: link.

You'll need either an Abit NF7-S or an Asus A7N8X-Deluxe to be able to have full access to all of the multipliers on that chip. Those are the only two boards that I know of that have the 5-bit whatever-it's-called, to be able to access the multi's above 12.5x.

well that kind of sucks. Newegg has the chip running at 2.0 out of the box...is that accurate?

2400+ is 2ghz stock. I used to have one on my 8rda+ and i got 2.2 easily at 200fsb.

ok....I got everything installed...but windows says that its only running at 1.49ghz....any ideas on this one?

Go into the motherboard's BIOS and set the CPU to a 133MHz bus speed on the CPU PnP Setup page. If your memory is PC2100 or faster, also set the memory to 133MHz.

Thanks for the compliment and you could always try for the 150MHz/150MHz option that I seem to recall being in there. Insane3D ran his that way, I know... the PCI bus will be a bit out of spec, but hey. If you want to do some serious OC'ing and you already have some fast RAM (say, PC3200 or higher) then you could get one of the boards that myocardia recommended, and go wild with any mix of multiplier and bus speed that your hardware can take :Q
