How far will AMD go with Socket 939?

I just hope they make it to 3.0 GHz stock, but i have this feeling that's not gonna happen anytime soon.

When that happens, i'll be upgrading for sure 🙂

AMD's bringing on a new socket in 2006 is the word - socket M2 as far as the desktop is concerned. It'll be moving back to a Socket A paradigm in the sense that new-gen budget, mainstream, and performance chips will all share the same socket.

Seems that Socket 939, and 754 to a certain extent, will be supported throughout next year as well. Within that time, I full well expect for AMD to break the 3 GHz barrier on the Hammer core.

Supposedly Socket M2 will be because of support for DDR2 along with whatever other upgrades they come up with.

Yeah you got it. Socket A will soon be a fond memory. I think Sempron 754 will make a great successor though. The performance and overclocking should be good - it'll just lack the 64-bit action of the Athlon. But then again, so did Athlon XP of course.

I hope they put off DDR2 in favor of DDR3. Samsung already has prototype. Though I suppose with onboard controllers and a large L2 the latency of DDR2 wouldn't be that bad.

By 2006 i would hope they have DDR2 Mem with a latency of 2-5-5 @ 667 Mhz at least ... I can always dream cant I? 😀

good to hear about the new socket, that kinda makes me not buying a 939 and getting a 754 instead all the better. as im gonna have to buy new mobo, ram n cpu and graphics card anyway in 2006

nice to know i save a bit of cash

Christmas they'll swicth to 1271, in the mean time I predict:

May:
FX-57 2.8Ghz
4200-2.6Ghz 1mb lvl2
3600-2.2Ghz 1mb Lvl2

August-
Dual cores @ 1.8, 2.0, 2.2

November-
FX-59 - 3.0 ghz
and a Dual core 2.4
