I did this kind of commute for years and years...drive 2+ hours to work in the morning...work 10, 12, 14 hours...drive 2-4 hours home at night. (depends on traffic)

My last 3 jobs...I got up at 2:30 AM, left the house by 4:00. Started work at 6:00, was lucky to be off work by 6:30 PM, and on a GOOD night, I was home by 9:00...and in bed by 10...roll over and do it all again...By Thursday, I passed myself on the freeway.

I don't miss it a bit.

Ugh, I think my record was 45 minutes to cover 2.8 miles going home when I was new to Dallas and didn't know any back routes.

I'm a mobile employee. It's about 20 miles(40 miles round trip) to my "start point", and anything after that earns mileage.

If it works out financially, working at Walmart or any "low end job" with a very short commute beats any job with a long commute.

Of course any work from home job would beat anything. That would be awesome.

Financially is only a small factor of a real job.

Usually, 12 minutes though as I am going to work at 5:40am and leaving at 2:30pm so traffic is light at those times.

That's what is key for me. I carpool with my wife. We get in at 7:30 and *should* be done with work at 4:00. But she constantly gets distracted and pulled into various things and is lingering around the office until 5:00.

If we get out at 4:00 it's a 25 minute drive. If we leave at 5:00 it's an hour as we hit rush hour.

Hate it. But it's still cheaper and more convenient to car pool than and save on miles/gas/parking than it is to drive separate.

25-35 minutes by car, depending upon the time of day. 15-16 km depending on the route. It's all city streets.

Note, this is by design. I wanted to maximize my $ for my home purchase, so was willing to go a bit further out, but with a ceiling of a 30 minute commute. I made it a point to try the drive during rush hour before buying the house. At that time, it took exactly 30 mins after 5 pm.

To save 10 mins for the drive on a similar house to the one we wanted, it would have been a 25% price premium, and 25% is a lot of money in Toronto for a detached home.

5.9 miles, but it could be as short as 4.9 miles if I chose to take the most direct route (which happens to be the slowest route). Takes between 12-16 minutes depending on how many lights I get stuck at.

And my wife works in the same office, yet we take separate cars. I get in earlier and leave earlier to pick our daughter up from school each day.

Today it was 40 miles to a hospital. Tomorrow I have a school to go to that's about 120miles away. Thursday and Friday I will be able to work from home.

36 miles each way for me: 45 min in the morning, up to 90 minutes on the way home depending on traffic.
