How far can you oc your A64 3000+

Actually how far can most of the Athlon 64 3000+ can go?
I am looking at the cheapest cpu (a64 grade, i just don't know the name) that can reach 3500+ or 3700+(how many mhz?)

I have mine for everyday running at 2.5GHz at 1.45v. Have to go to 1.6v to get 2.7GHz. Running ThermalTake Big Typhoon...really nice cooler.
 
But you gotta get teh uberz rammage. Whats the point of spending more on the RAM but saving on the CPU? To get to 2.6 you gotta have insane ram. Or am I missing that you can somehow increase the multiplier?
 
I'm looking for my max right now.

E3 stepping A64 3000+

Currently running SuperPI at 290x9 (2610mhz)

At stock voltage (1.45) with the retail fan.
 
The 3000+ Venice often has a hard time hitting over 2.5 GHz because of such a low multiplier, your better off to spend the extra $10 and get the 3200+. I have had mine running at 2.72 in windows but not stable.

2.0 GHz - 3200+
2.2 GHz - 3500+
2.4 GHz - 3800+
2.6 GHz - 4100 +

Actually, the low multiplier causes problems on motherboards that can't handle the high HTT.

I'm running mine 2.7GHZ (300x9) @ 1.54v. I can hit 2.6GHZ @ 1.45v, but after that, gotta bump the voltage. My temps are around 47*C-49*C under load using XP-90. I'm almost positive it will got to 2.8GHZ with a voltage bump, but the temps scare me.

Get the DFI LanParty Ultra-D and you will be able to take that Venice to 2.5GHZ+ easy. 🙂

EDIT: Make sure and try to get an E3 chip, I've heard mixed results regarding the E6.
 
The 3000+ should have no trouble achieving 3800+ speeds, or for sure, 3500+ performance.

I'd recommend an Opteron 144 though.
It's a bit more, but you get 1 MB L2 cache, & better OCing potential.

The lower multiplier does not really cause any problems it is really the RAM timings.
I run at 300 X 9 very stably and have tweaked out my RAM (original OZ 2 X 512 PC4000) after spending weeks at it.
If your RAM can run at 220-225 (i.e. like PC3700) then you can even run at 333 X 8 which puts the HTT in spec at 333 X 3 = 1000 which is what i did using my Corsair XMS PC3200 (2 X 256) for a while. The issue is latency vs bandwidth and what your RAM can take not lower multiplier but then I am still a rookie at AMD 64!
 
HTT total bus doesn't matter, just keep it under 1000

3000+ e3 does 2.6ghz at 1.475 volts prime
does 2.7ghz at 1.58 volts prime

best boards for pci-e are the dfi nf4 ultra/sli/expert or the epox ep9na (check the anandtech nf4 roundup)
 
Been almost 2yrs since I bought a skt754 3000+ NC, it did 2.4ghz. Still runs@2.3ghz in friend's system. If I bought a 939 variant all this time later, and it didn't do MUCH better, I'd be bent.

so what is Opteron?
just with 1024kb cache but at a s940 board?

which one does better in gaming and windows load time?
i believe all cpu Athlon 64 level is already fast enough for any software, which means the hardware is fast enough..

I am going to get a new board so doesn't matter s940 or s939..
And i may go SLI in the future, so it is good to have SLI ready , but it is not a must.
Ram i am going to use Corsair Value series ram, so is it good for overclocking and good CAS latency rate?

 
i was able to push my 3000+ nc up to 2.5ghz at stock voltage on the stock cooler, granted i didn't go all out on testing its stability. and i didn't try any higher. but i was able to play far cry and ut2k4 for a couple of hours. i went back to stock speeds though because i wanted to enable cool and quiet. but with rmclock i guess i can do both.

actually S939 opterons are out for workstation use I guess, but they OC really well.

My 3000 winnchester CBBID 0503 the crappiest stepping possible I think, did 9x290 pretty easily, with like 1.6vcore. Temps were only 54C on the stock cooler too, in the middle of the summer.
 
If you have a good OC'ing board like a DFI Ultra-D then you're only limited by the processor. I run my 3000 Venice at 2.5 ghz for every day use (plus then I can run my mem at it's rated 250 mhz) at 1.45v, but it can do round 2.6 - 2.63 stable at 1.55v.
 
my 24/7 is 2700mhz @1.534v

prime stable 20+hrs up to 2781mhz @1.623v

can get SuperPi 1M @2898mhz
SuperPi 512k @2907mhz
both at ~1.7v

seems that's about the best I can get on air

There are 5 types of Athlon64 single core from AMD that I can think of,
Newcastle - the oldest core, built with 130nm process
Clawhammer - a updated version of Newcastle, and I am not sure about the differences, it's s939 w/ dual channel vs. the older s754 w/ single channel
Winchester - build on 90nm, less heat and awesome overclocking abilities
Venice - the newest and a improved version of winchester, 90nm and good overclocking abilites with an improved memory controller that allows 4 dimm of ram to be used in DDR400 mode and the addition of SSE3. All Venice has 512kb L2 cache.
San Diego - 1MB L2 cache version of the Venice, available as the 3700+ as the lowest model.

As for opteron, they should be almost the same as Athlon64 but they are supposed to be higher quality chip w/ a better memory controller so that they can support 8 dimms.
They were only available in s940 before, and therefore no one was interested in them because s940 CPU required expensive and slow "Registered Memory".
However, people are now hunting for low model s939 opteron because they are compatible with Athlon64 motherboard and they are suppose to overclock like crazy since they are of higher quality.
