How far can I OC my 2.8E CPU?

Hello all,

I just went out and bought a 2.8E Prescott CPU. I was originally going to buy the 800MHz Northwood version but the difference in price was only $10.00 so I bought the Prescott instead.

Anyways, I wanted to know if anyone else out there has this CPU and I wanted to know how far you guys have been able to OC this thing. The rest of my system spec is in my sig.

For your reference, my computer is being watercooled by the Koolance Exos kit with the 200-G CPU waterblock. At the moment, the temp is reading 28 C at the non-OC'ed setting.

I also have a GPU waterblock which receives the water before it travels on to the CPU block.

My memory is decent and they both have copper heatspreaders on them with an additional fan blowing air to them.

I have 2 fans in the front--one 80mm and one 120mm.

I have 2 fans in the back--both 80mm.

I have a clear-side panel with one 80mm fan.

My PSU has two fans--one heading out and one thats sucks the air in from the inside of the case.

So, what do you guys think? The memory has been used before in my previous system and they can take the OC increases fine.

Let's hear your feedback!!

3.5 ghz isn't uncommon for the 2.8E's on air, and some people who have the right overclocking motherboard and at least watercooling have been able to get them up to around 4 ghz.

just try and see, every processor is unique, so theres no way to tell when you're will crap out, if you take it easy and up fsb 1 mhz at a time and test after every increase, then you will know the limit, stay at least 5 mhz (fsb) UNDER this limit, since the limit is ehm well .. the limit.

also dont be surprised that when summer comes around you'll have to lessen your OC.

Is that 28C off of the Exos unit? Because if so that is nowhere near the actual temperature of your chip. Go download something like Motherboard Monitor and see what you actual temps are.

yeah i ran mine all the way up to 3.8ghz on air
but couldn't get it fully stable above 3.4ghz due to heat and this is with the best air cooling i could find :)

it is kinda hot around here tho, i am sweating typing this next to my Prescott machine tho

i don't think 4ghz would be hard at all with the proper water cooling or subzero rig

good luck

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I set the FSB to 230 and my CPU is currently running at 3.22GHZ. The idle temp went up, though, to 32 C. The voltage is set at 1.50V. My goal is to reach at least 3.4GHZ. Once 3.22GHZ proves stable, I'll give 3.4GHZ a shot later.

Where are you getting your temperature readings from? Like I said in my earlier post, if they are coming from the LCD on the Exos unit, then those are not the actual temps of your processor.

Yes, those temps are coming from the Exos' LCD panel. Yes, I'm aware of the dif in temp between the on-die and the Koolance thermal probe. I'll Dl MBM later on to see the degree of difference.

i am running 230fsb right now with 1.5v (actual)
and my temps under load are about 66 to 70c

I am running 250fsb on my 2.8E with my koolance setup. I have the full Koolance case, CPU300 waterblock, and the new style Koolance NB cooler. My room temp is 71F and my water temp is 32c with the fan setting on 2. If I bump it up to 3 I get 29c water.

CPU temps are at 53 under full load 24X7 (Using F@H X 2)

The problem with the Prescott and temps, I believe lie in the NorthBridge. Sure the Prescott gets hot but check out you NB temps when they hit around 55c (Reported by Abit's monitoring tool) things become unstable. With water now applied to mine and my MAX 3 my NB temp is around 40c wereas before I was hitting 60c+.

This is all on default voltage of ~1.4v. When I have some free time and am not at work I am going to try for 4gig.
