how expensive would it be to travel around europe for a year?

If I go traveling around Europe for a year, how much money should I be expecting to pay for staying in hostels, eating, using the eurorail, etc. Any ballpark figures? I was thinking like 10k maybe? more? less?

for a year and with how crappy the dollar is right now? I would say more than 10k, prolly closer to 15-20.

Probably 15-25 grand, according to me.
If you're going to go to some above average places, estimate 30-50K.

10k US dollars? For a year? Try closer to triple that.

At least $20k.

You figure $50 a day ($25 for the hostel, $25 for food/entertainment/local travel)
360days x $50 a day = $18K
$1k for air travel to Europe and back
$1k for other expenses

Learn to play the guitar, then you can finance as you go.

I met a guy from Ireland when I was in germany that was making a living by playing on the streets. Are you Irish?

Also, check out the airports. You can get around the continent for a few euros (Literally, like 5. Government subsidies from hell) by plane. I don't think the train is quite that cheap.

There is a Europass that you can get. I forget how much it is (800 euro?), but it's unlimited traveling by train through europe.

You could then skip the hostels and sleep on the train! Check things out by day, sleep/travel by night!

Funny cause I live here and only the balls-out cheap sh1t airlines are THAT cheap, and even then you need to book 25 light years in advance and put up with airports 'close to the destination'.

I guess food costs roughly the same in Canada and Europe. Hotels and Youth Hostels however could eat up your budget pretty fast. Doing some research one could find cheap Backpacker Hotels an such, though.

Travel by aircraft sometimes is cost effective but for 5? all you will get is a pat on your shoulder 😀 Europe has good train connections (and personally I think it's most comfortable to travel by train). Probably the best and most flexible offer is Eurail (price list). (If you're citizen of Europe or certain north African nations, other conditions apply).

To play music in public space is not allowed in some cities and you need a grant for working. No spontaneus idea how to make money here as a tourist, sorry.

You may ask the threadstarter of this thread after his trip to Europe about his... financial experiences 😉

Depends on your timing I guess, I got a flight to Malmo in Sweden from London Stansted a couple of weeks ago for literally 25cents, but taxes brought it up to about 10Euro.

I have a round trip flight from Copenhagen to Prague this weekend for about $80US.

Go to east europe.. very cost effective

buy a lada for $200, enjoy the <$1 smokes and liquor, cheap food, cute girls, etc

i went to england on $500 for 2 weeks. i ultimately ended up borrowing from the group of friends i had been traveling with -- approximately $1000. stuff in europe is more expensive than in the US, and especially canada, and you should take note of that.
