I'm only going to be home for a few more weeks and then I'm going to college so it makes no sense for me to buy a wireless router.
However, I've heard that if you have a wifi-enabled laptop, you can just drive around and all the various "hotspots" would just sprout up out of nowhere and you could have your pick of places from which to leech off internet.
Well yesterday I took my x1000 (centrino 1.3, 512 mb, 40 gb, wifi, bluetooth, etc.) with me as my dad drove us on a trip across town. I had that stupid wireless networking window open and was refreshing like a madman to no avail. Nothing showed up on the entire ride. Surely there must have been one or two "hotspots" open and free for public consumption? (I live in the Washington DC area).
So can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong or point me in the right direction (i.e. programs/utilities to download)? Thanks.
