How exactly do I get folding going on my machine?

Hello, my primary computer is in my signature, but I have other machines I intend to fold with as well.

I have the gpu client folding. My question is simple, how do I fold with my cpu and use 3 of my processor cores doing so? I've spent an entire day browsing forums trying to figure it out. Why don't they have an installer that lets me pick how many cpus I want to use, my name, my team?

Surely there is someone else here who has a quad core and a gpu and folds with both the processor and the gpu. I need to fold using 3 of the cpu cores so that the gpu has a free one to feed it.

If you use the SMP client, put it into a working directory and find it using CMD.exe. Run install.bat. Then, run "Folding@home-Win32-x86.exe -configonly" and set it up, and under advanced options, set the "-advmethods" flag. Beforehand, you can rename the long Folding@home exe to fah6.exe. Now when you run it, run "fah6.exe -smp 3".

When I mix GPU and CPU clients, (on a quad core) I don't specifically tell it to free any CPU resources. Both clients run OK and share the CPU as necessary.

If you are GPU folding with NV cards, use the 180.x drivers (or possibly newer), as they use up nearly zero CPU time while folding, and that leaves the CPU time open for CPU clients as well.

I found that on the quads, the 20% reduction in GPU PPD was not offset by the smaller increase in the SMP PPD. On the X2, it was worth it because it let me replace the standard CPU cient with an SMP, but on the quads, you'll get significantly higher overall PPD if you use the 178.24 drivers so the GPU can crank.

When I am configuring it, it says that it won't accept a blank password. I don't use a password for my windows log on. Do I really have to make one just so I can fold?

Yes you do And you also have to have .Net Framework for all this to work properly.
After the install of the F@H program, you open the program up, hit the "install" icon and enter your user name and password( password twice ). All this will be done once you enter a password for your "windows". After this is completed, it should work.
