Were these old CRT monitors?
When I was around 11, a friend about the same age as me got brain tumor a few months after using a CRT of questionable quality (Digitec brand). I had the same monitor coz our dads bought our PC's together. Difference is, my dad was concerned about radiation so he forbade me to use it without a radiation filter (not sure what they were called at the time). The monitor emitted really strong radiation and it was impossible for me to enjoy looking at it without that filter. My friend's dad decided to save the $25 or so that the filter cost. Long story short, my friend survived the operation but was mentally incapacitated. He was the most talkative kid and turned into this chronic special needs kid.

I was thinking more of the flicker effect as the image is scanned across a CRT monitor.
