How easy is it to get a handicapped parking tag?

Saw a dude pull up in a Cadillac CTS-V and take a prime handicapped parking space and hang his tag from the mirror. Then he got out and walked to the store like any normal human being.

How easy is it to get a tag and how do they enforce it or approach someone if they suspect abuse?

I love how they have those spaces at like a mall or something
if you can't walk across a parking lot, you can't walk across a mall

I'm not sure how easy it is, but when I had a broken leg and had to be on crutches I had to fill out forms, and pay a fee for them. i choose not to get one though because I felt that there are others who need that handicap spot more than I do. But man, it pisses of me off seeing others take advantage of it.

My friend had one for her foot surgery, they give them out for a extensive period of time. Her foot was fine after a few months but the thing didn't expire for another 3 to 4 months.

I used to work with a guy who had one of those hanging tags because of his dad. He was only supposed to use it when his dad when in the car, but sometimes he'd use it to get a good spot at a restaurant at lunch time.

I know of a beach with a parking lot at the top. The only way down to the water is a steep set of probably 100 steps that goes down the side of a cliff. The parking lot is always full except for the handicapped spots that no one ever uses.

I've had one for a couple of years, and my wife has had one for many years. Yeah, it takes a doctor's note, but they're pretty easy to get. There are usually docs who will write you a note for one "for a small fee" in every town. Yes, you can get reported, and DMV is SUPPOSED to investigate, but they're so swamped, I doubt they really do...It could be the guy is using his wife's pass to park, but unless he's picking her up, that is illegal, as is the guy who uses his dad's pass at lunch...I know every state is different, but in Kahleefornnya, parking in a handicapped space illegally starts at $271, and for fraudulent use of a valid pass, could also include a separate fine for that, PLUS, the valid holder COULD lose their parking pass...now enforcing it is another story...cops tend to have WAY too much to do, to worry about the handicapped oarking spots, unless they happen to stumble on to it, or a business owner calls and complains...

BTW, some colleges have "friendly doctors" who write the orders for the football players and other athletes...like "preferred parking passes"...I LOVE it when they get busted for it...

I know a woman that had a stroke a few months ago. She has a handicapped tag because she has a lot of trouble walking. She does her best to make it look like she can walk normally, though, because she doesn't want to stand out. She's got one of those tags, and I heard that recently she was making her way to Trader Joes and some guy started yelling at her "What is wrong with you?!" etc. Really scared her, and she was shook up pretty bad. Just because you can't see what's wrong with someone using the tag doesn't mean they're not in pain or having trouble walking.

I've wondered how easy they would be to get. I take my grandmother who is 90, shopping, doctor, church, etc. I usually just drop her off at the entrance then I go and park. Some places we go it takes me forever to find a place to park, getting a handicapped tag would make things easier.

She needs to ask her doctor for one. Usually granted for the elderly because of many infirmities. but it will be issued to HER, not you...

ummm maybe for people in wheelchairs. when i take my mom who happens to be wheelchair bound to the mall those spots are convient because they are bigger which makes it easier to get in and out of the car.

She has emphysema and she wears a respirator some of the time.

Yeah, wasn't expecting it to me issued to ME. However, my question is: since I am the one driving and its my car, can I use her tag when I am driving her around? Are they transferable to another car? Or will it be valid for any car?

yes, i have two. they are issues to the person not the car. when you take the docs script to the DMV they will give you a registiration for the tags with the persons name on it, not the car. i have two because we never know what vehicle we are going to be useing to take my mom out. The tags stay in the glovebox until needed then we hang it from the rear view mirror.

What amazes me is the number of doctors walking around in the wal-mart parking lot that can diagnose a persons medical condition from 20 yards away.

They then make a determination as to whether or not the diagnosed person should be in possession of a disabled parking pass.

I'm just saying, if you can operate a 400HP stick shift vehicle...
