Odd! Virginia is second to the top and DC is the bottom. I guess people in DC who want jobs should cross that bridge. Then they can go to work for a beltway bandit and cross back over to the job.

Thepeople in DC who want jobs do cross the bridge and work in VA. I'd bet you half of the unemployed in DC don't want to work they would rather hang out at the Liquor Store all day.

How many states are out there like NH that stll have no sales tax or state income tax?

Hoepfully the House and Senate will stop our new Governor from changing that too.

Tell me about it. I still am wondering how the hell he got elected. From what I'm hearing, Benson did something to upset the police and fireman's unions, and they got behind Lynch. Kerry was the only democrat I voted for, I voted for Gregg, Bass, and Benson. I really like Benson too, he stood up to the Bush administration in regards to getting drugs cheaper from Canada, and didn't just tow the party line.

VA is #2 at 3.2%. The rate is just over 2% in the county I live in (Henrico) and it's probably fair to say that if you're unemployed here it's because you choose to be.

Dasm, my states, (Ohio & Michigan) are way down at the bottom. Too many people relying on the big companies to provide manufacturing jobs. But the good news is both states are doing a lot of technical training, community colleges everywhere are swollen with people upgrading thier skills. Perhaps when the jobs come back, they will be more technical instead of all the brain dead assembly line crap we've relied on for decades.

The "technical" jobs in Michigan are non-existent. Compuware and EDS are laying people off left and right. I'm not sure what kind of skills you are going to acquire at a community college.

Any thoughts?
IIRC, California and New York both have republican governors.

Oh look... (blue) MA, VT, NJ, etc... have low unemployment..

Oh look... (red) Texas, Alabama and those pesky Alaskans are above average.

Is that the sound of a bad study? How about this for another idea in the same fashion. Texas and CA share borders with Mexico. Michigan, NY share borders with Canada. They're all above average on unemployment. HMM....... ;)

For the Canadians:

Canada 7.1

Newfoundland and Labrador 15.8%
Prince Edward Island 11.8%
Nova Scotia 8.8%
New Brunswick 10.1%
Quebec 8.6%
Ontario 6.5%
Manitoba 5.1%
Saskatchewan 5.2%
Alberta 4.7%
British Columbia 6.9%

so only 5 of our provinces are below your worst state. only 3 below the national average.
and we are running a surplus...wierd...:)

ya but on this board, 5.4% unemplyment under a conservative govt is a disaster, but 7.1% under a liberal govt is heaven. I guess different parties are are held to different standards.

yeah. i agree there is a double standard. But there are 16.5 million unemployed in the US (that is larger than our whole workforce)
we have 2.1 million unemployed.

The unemployed all have healthcare, social security, and welfare which is livable.
I go to one of the best universities in the country and there are people here who have unemployed parents. It doesnt affect our country much as we have good social programs.

I'd like to see a lower rate...but this is hard to do with a cold climate and very dispersed population...
We do well for ourselves.

Tennessee 5.1%.

The county just north of me is steady at 3% unemployment, the county south of where I live is hovering around 10% unemployement and sometimes goes as high as 14% with seasonal layoffs.
