How does Window's Performance Scoring Work?

Just installed Windows 7, and noticed that the performance scores now no longer max out at 5.9. However the scoring does seem strange since overclocking from 2.6 to 3.6 on my e7300 does not change the score at all (stock it was rated at 6.3). Is the scoring now just based on detected chipset or do I need a really big OC to change the score? Similarly overclocking doesn't seem to affect my score for my video card which is at 7.4. I'm not sure what the new max is or the minor performance gains I can get from overclocking can make a difference to that or not though.

I think max is now 7.9 in Win7

You need to run it again to see any changes on overclocking....If you didn't yet

It works according to the bottleneck concept. The lowest score is the actual score. Mostly HD's are the limiting factor so you can OC untill you drop but the score wont get any better.

I honestly wouldn't bother anyway 🙂

Dude dont bother aiming for anything higher then 7.

To get higher then 7, you need an insane IO speed like Raided SSD's, and multi high end gpu's in scalable config.

Lol? I get 7.1 with an overclocked 5770.

ummm screenie?

what are u getting in your hard drive sector?

This is 4 raptors on Raid 0's score..

Gulftown with QUAD FIRE.
Old Cat drivers... so i think thats why i got a 7.1, but i didnt care after looking at how pathetic my hard drive sector is...
im missing the SSD's

Omfg nda has been breached! We now know all about gulftown! 7.8 windows index! Aigo is going to be dead in a ditch by tomorrow

*edit*
wow stupid, i cant type in all caps

It doesn't matter what I'm getting on my HDD section, you said to get over 7 you needed "and multi high end gpu's in scalable config." I could get a 1.0 on as my HDD score for all I care, a single GPU still wouldn't be the limiting factor.

How does it work? Terribly. While it's admirable that they included a general 'rating' system, it's pretty pointless overall.

It works admirably for what it is intended for, which is preventing OEMs from selling horribly unbalanced PC configurations to clueless consumers and passing them off as high-end systems. This way, if they try to sell you a Dell with a $500 graphics card and a Celeron, you'll still have a crappy WEI score.

I get 7.1 on the HDD score with a single OCZ Agility 120gb and two Samsung F3's in RAID 1

uhhh no windows score is based on your lowest score.

so if ir hd limited like i am.. your score is whatever is lowest.

so a 7 is impossible unless u have both ssds and gpu.

show me you 7.1 on 1 gpu. id like to see that...

edit: wow... can u guys read what i said?? to get a final weighted score.
if ur final weighted score is over 7 show me...

the only systems i saw with a final score higher then 7 had what i explained.

ruby u have the most power io system this section of the forum knows.. so u stay out of this... 😛

or tell thses guys what ur running to make them understand..

also 7.1 isnt what i was implyingg... 7.3-over is above 7 in my book.

i/o is king! What sense does it make to have 32 cores and have them dying of thirst waiting for data to come down the pipe? It's like buying the fastest car in the world but being forced to drive with skinny bias ply tires. (inflated to sidewall pressure of course!)

Yeah aigo needs to get on the SSD wagon already...all that excess CPU power he doesn't even use coupled with old mechanical HDDs... 🙁

Rubycon, what's your HDD config for those 7.9s?

Windows performance rating? Ignore it, it's useless

Ignore it, it's useless

It's not useless.

It's somewhat inaccurate, & not all that important, true.

But it's still a basic general performance indicator that's helpful for the average clueless consumer.

TRUST ME

you dont want to know...

Lemme put it to you this way... for about 1yr Ruby has been nagging my butt to get an ARC-1680ix controller.
This controller is a "TOY" to her.... like how CPU's are for me... if u get my drift.

LOL.. so i did.... and well i learned the hardway u dont get controllers cards when your overclocking to the extreme.

BSOD and drive cycles on more then 4 drives = awefully painful.

Blah i had

It causes more confusion and problems than it solves. We've had several "OMG my windoes performance index went down WHAT HAPPEN" threads lately

I got a new revision ARC1680IX now that cuts the wait time down so it's comparable to DUMBRAID (junk on the motherboard).

Here you can see just how long that wait time was:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Sb2MFrygZE

That was with 10 15K SAS drives and 5 7.2K SATA drives.
The noise you hear in the background is our ship creaking from 20-25 foot waves from tropical storm Cristobal. 😱

this is why i ditched the controller, and each time u ask me again, i keep saying NTY.

I thought that creaking noise was one of your shipmates banging his head on the wall for rebooting the server.
😛

It's more than worth it.

I got tired of it too and what I did when I wanted to OC was set up another system with the chip I was trying to oc running off a single HDD. Remember I get two of everything so this was easy to do.

What was not so easy is securing a sprawling PC out of the case on a table. A TRUE strapped onto a motherboard sitting on a bench is a recipe for disaster in rolling seas! There is nothing worse than seeing a fully running PC on a table get dumped on the floor within a few feet of your reach! So I stopped using expensive cards! 295GTXs cannot take being thrown on the floor while in the motherboard! The PCI-E latch holds tight and the weight of the card just snaps off the entire edge connector!

The sad thing is my CPUs are already tested for me with notes. But I always try for more. O/C addiction is a disorder you know?

Oh there's plenty of banging going on but that's of no interest on the forums! 😛
