how does vnc work?

Just curious? Ive been using windows RDP but have to port forward to get it working on a lot of networks. I noticed the other day at my dads work the remote support he got, how they got us to download a small file and once opened it, they were able to connect to our system. How do they do this? Does this require having to port forward at all or anything?

I need a solution where someones network i havnt set up before (such as setting up port forwarding or a vpn) i can access upon their approval a similar way as described before.

The program that was used i think was Tight VNC.

Help would be appreciated thanks

Crossloop is one of the best free such applications I've used.

For a pay application, we like RapidAssist, as it is java based and does not require installing anything. Either way, though.

thanks for that..dont really like the idea of crossloop but RapidAssist sounds pretty cool. I might have to look into that further, but im still a bit curious about how to do it through VNC- is VNC firewall transparent?

VNC like ant other Network application works through ports.

If there is Firewall port are protected and thus it nedd an open port.

Ports per-se are always open and ready for action on any computer.

For security purpose Ports are blocked by Firewalls.

Typically it is the software Firewall on the computer, and the NAT Firewall in a Cable/DSL

Router (wired or wireless) that Block the ports toward the Internet.

The needed Ports have to be open in the Router toward the computer (goes by IP number) that run the Application/Game.

If there is software Firewall on the computer that runs the Application/Game the ports have to be opened through the computer's Firewall too.

yes i understand all that, but im curious how they were able to connect to our computer without having to change our firewall settings- would they have just set something up in our firewall settings before would they?

That small file they sent you is the key. You established a connection outbound from your network. This persistent connection can be used bidirectionally now, and that is how it works.

oo ok is understand that now- so how would i go about setting this up through vnc where i send the key to the person in need of help?
