How does virus Scan work?

How does virus scan work? Does it detect virus contained in a file only when the file is received into the PC and/or it also can detect the virus when the PC is already infected?

Sure, it can detect virus's if the computer is all ready infected. That is the whole point

Yes it will catch a infection in the system if it is up to date with all of the infections out there ( if you run there update daily or at lease every other day so it can be programed for all the new issues out there). So if you never ran the update then no it may not catch the infection as it does not know it even exsists as the bad people keep making bad infections daily so you have to keep up to date.
