How does USA advance if they win?

I heard for the World Baseball classic that if America beats South AFrica tomorrow they get to go ahead of Canada and USA advances. USA and Canada would have identical records, but doesn't Canada own the tie-breaker becasue they won the game agianst America. Shouldn't head-to-head matchup come before ERA stats? Why does USA get to advance over Canada?

Probably because the biggest audiance for this contrived sporting event is in america. If the USA doesn't advance, nobody watches... hence this whole episode of nationalistic fakery fails without america's presence and nobody makes any money.

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm going to have to guess that the rules were in place BEFORE they started. That tends to be how it works.

AFAIK, this method, or something similar, is how round-robin pools generally operate. I could be wrong, though.

It's because there are going to be 3 teams with a 2-1 record.

Since you can't do head to head matchups, they will be going for Runs/9 innings. USA and Mexico are the tops of that category. Canada is out if the US beats S. Africa.

edit--

The Runs/9 category is only for the teams involved. So this is how it stacks:

Mexico allowed 3 runs vs. USA and Canada
US allowed 8 runs vs. Mexico and Canada
Canada allowed 15 runs vs. USA and Mexico

This is why they are out (assuming the US wins the next game)

Second tiebreaker is actually runs allowed.

They have to go to the 2nd tie breaker because there are going to be 3 teams with a 2-1
record. There is no head-to-head comparison involved.

Tiebreakers in WBC are determined by runs allowed.

no, SA is not involved because its not a 2-1 team. Its how many runs against the other 2-1 teams.
