How does Turion perform in Dothan's weak spots?

So it appears turion has a slight advantage over dothan in everything the dothan did well, but how does turion perform in the places where dothan was/is lacking?

The turion is basically an A64 on a 754 platform. Look at the comparison between the A64 and Pentium M in the cpu/chipset section of the main site to see the performance.

It fills in nicely as a A64 would....The difference is that the P-M is another complete architecture whereas turion is a sckt 754 low voltage chip....It has 64bit capability which may be nice for some as well...

I posted a link to a review a page or two back. The Dothan's only real advantage is in battery life while performing CPU-intensive tasks.

That's a HUGE advantage when it comes to laptops.

but who is doing CPU-intensive tasks all the time when their laptop is on? Most people will have their laptop either idling or doing non-cpu intensive tasks for the majority of the time, and in that area Turion beats the dothan on battery life.

No it doesn't, not when every other review on the net points the other way, and when laptoplogic's own review of the T43 disagrees with their findings. The T43 with a 25% smaller 6 cell battery lasts 2:01 on the conditioning test and 3:40 on the life test.

For labtops, the most important thing is battery life. Performance is only second to the battery life.

It really depends what you do with your laptop. Is it for heavy traveling? Or do you just need it to go to hotels, etc. occasionally?

Also keep in mind the processor tested was a 35w Turion. A 25w Turion operates at a much lower voltage (1.35V vs. 1.2V), and should be very comparable to the Dothan during load. And, of course, idle performance should be the same as the 35w Turion reviewed.

Ithink it is funny that there is one review that points to the turion being better in battery life and suddenly it is better. Maybe I will write a review where Intel owns amd at gaming and pos it here, you can all believe me. EVERY retail computer store I have been to has said that centrino will beat turion in battery life...hell most of the laptop makers are tagging the turion with a lower battery life...

And I am still yet to see a turion go clock for clock with Dothan in superpi, or gaming...

I said the Turion was better than the Dothan on mostly idling circumstances because in the only review I have seen that measured battery life under those conditions, Turion won. If I am wrong and there are other reviews that say otherwise, please, point me to them rather than just calling me a fanboy. I'll be happy to read them correct myself.

And moron the title of the thread was how does the Turion perform in Dothans's weak spots....nobody was saying it was better in gaming "clock for clock"....Now run along and do a couple more superpi passes and stroke the ego....

Or maybe take your sorry arse over to the AutoGK thread and benchmark a useful thing a computer can do....I bet the Turion clock for clock will beat you there...maybe we can get Mark's son PC to run that test as well...

I am neither impressed by you or your Dothan!!!!

Every laptop review on PCMag has a BatteryMark rating. Laptoplogic has several other reviews, including one on the IBM T43.

http://www.laptoplogic.com/reviews/ibm/81/12/1/

The T43's average power usage on the BatteryMark conditioning test is 26.5W, in the life test it's 14.5W.

PCMag has a review of the Gateway M680XL. It has the same video card as the Acer 8104, but has a faster P-M CPU, a 7200rpm HD and a 17" LCD. In the BatteryMark life test, it get's a battery life of 5:11 using a 98WHr battery. That's an average power usage of 18.9W. By comparison, using the Laptoplogic times for the Acer 8104, we get 28W for the conditioning test and 24.9W for the life test.

Here's a review of a 1.8GHz MT series Turion.

http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?cid=14&id=1659&pg=6

In power usage, it gets beaten by the BenQ S72 which uses a slightly slower clocked Dothan/Sonoma system that has a bigger LCD, a faster HD and a X600 video card. It also gets beaten by a Celeron-M based system that doesn't have Enhanced SpeedStep.

Hey, the topic is not the only thing you read on a post. Read the first sentence

So it appears turion has a slight advantage over dothan in everything the dothan did well

Must i stress he said everything!!!!! This is an incorrect statement. I believe you are into flaming for others making incorrect statements. Where the hell is the turion superpi times, where is turion matching dothan in gaming clock for clock. Definatly not everywhere!!!!

Big man on Campus eh Duvie...Who better to lead the fanboyism than you!

Thread was going OK until you started shooting off your mouth....as usual!!!!

go read it, edited bro!

It bothers me that someone such as yourself does little but flame and state the obvious.

When was the last time you played with a Dothan chip Duvie?

I will have a turion on order soon...

I have one right in front of me....I just have it on its native use as a Laptop chip.....Sucks it is on this dell computer since it blue screens on stock setting like every 3-4 days....

Well as for your gripe you know the OP was referring to this article...

http://www.laptoplogic.com/resources/articles/42/11/1/

which shows the Turion of equal speed beating the Dothan both on their native platforms..What is the problem??? We all know the Dothan shines when yhou put it on a desktop that doesn't constrict it which slower bus and thus lower bandwidth.....He is talking laptops and your ego was hurt cause you know your Dothan rocks as the bastard-child on a modified desktop....refute what he is saying based on article showing similar speed Dothans and Turions on laptops....

DarkKnight69,

Do a google search for ML-37 versus P-M 760's...It appears the first 2 pages are all about the same article...I fail to see why his statement would even be false....Why should he show superpi times??? Try a worthwhile program cause if that is the pnly program that it shines in and not in any of the ones in the review it shows it as once again a cpu that leads in synthetic not stepping up to the plate in the real-world....

Celeron M<turion< Pentium M IMO.. Typical confugurations using the Turion will be battery life light, because those configurations were meant to be cheap alternatives to the Pentium M. Ob viously, there might be some instances where a Turion laptop will beat a Pentium M laptop in battery life, but generally, the Pentuim M configurations will win because people design Pentium M notebooks to maximize battery life.

At what price ?? $750 vs $1100 is a big difference. For my son (he got a loan and is paying for it himself) that is a lot of money when you make minimum wage.

so the turina is better at everything the dothan was good at? so the turian is better at battery life with cup-intensive tasts?? oh wait, no its not....

fanboy article....

are you Intelia's bizzaro?

but then again, you were going to retail stores. The rule of thumb with those is that they don't have a clue what they are talking about.
