How does this work!?:: Asian home remedies! **Come on, am I the only freak?**

When you have a headache, flu, cold, upset stomach or even diaherrea, we do this:

1. Grab a sharp pin or a needle
2. Lightly prick or sting your fingers (preferably thumb) in the region just above where your finger nails start.
3. Do it just enough so that a drop of blood or two will come out.
4. In most cases, you will see a dark to black colored blood come out and you will instantly feel better!

I don't believe this is placebo, I remember doing it once and I felt the headache go away as if it was being 'lifted' in an instant.

Their logics is that when you're sick, it often results in bad blood circulation (not the cause). And by 'extracting' the bad blood in the very ends of your limbs (hence your fingers and your toes) it immediately clears your system and makes you feel better.

In severe cases of being sick, people also do both thumbs and both toes...

I guess, it's a Korean thing!? We call it, "chim dda gi" (slang for acupuncture).

I just asked my chinese friends around and they never heard of it... Any Koreans here who knows what I'm talking about?

Where the fcuk did you get that from? Of all my years being Asian, this is the first time I've heard of something like this.

Do you honestly believe in this garbage? This reminds me of the Medieval days when doctors had their patients bleed to death because they believed it was the bad blood that made them ill.

I have a lot of doubts about chinese beliefs. As if drinking my mom's soups will give me better health... each of the soups have a specific purpose (headaches, eyesight, skin conditions, etc.). I still live with that BS today.

Amen, I hated drinking that crap. It stunk up the house and it was sometimes like drinking mud. Bleh

Didn't someone say a while ago that the Chinese believe if you sleep with a fan blowing on you you'll suffocate?

Above fingernail- cuticle area? Or fingertip?

above fingernail.. not the bottom, the top region before your finger nails start (just above of your finger crescents)

Thats because you're focused on the pricking yourself, and having a subconscious thought about how much it would or is going to hurt when you start bleeding, that you forget about your headache.

Just like how the saying goes, "Sex cures all".

Asian accupuncture/herbs works at least 90% of the time. Most people in china still visit those doctors in semi-life-threatening or less situations. Although there are very little scientific explanation to why it works, it has been used for >3000 years and is statistically shown to work.

do you keep some leeches around the house too? just in case?

Actually, I read an article recently that stated a small, but growing number of physicians are starting to use leech therapy for some ailments.

The only asian remedies I use on a semi-regular basis is loquat syrup for sore throats (it actually works, coats the throat really nice) and eagle balm/white lotus ointment on mosquito bites.

I took the Chinese herbal medicines for colds, coughs, headaches and stomach upsets while I was growing up. I still prefer that stuff over Tylenol, Nyquil, Pepto, etc. One great thing for me, the chinese herbs don't make me sleepy while non-drowsy cold medicine still makes me sleepy.

But I agree on the stinky stuff that my mom made me drink. Nor do I go for the foot thing that they were always trying to get me to do (think it's called reflexology).
