How does this sound?

I'm wanting to get a laptop for college next semester since I'll spend most of the day in my car (I commute 30 miles each way), and would rather use my own computer instead of the crappy PCs in the library...plus I like sitting in my car better. It'll be used for internet, word processing, music, movies, and the occasional game, nothing serious though.

I've narrowed it down to this notebook, and I'm trying to stay under $1000 before rebates, but if I go over a little bit as long as I spend no more than $1000 after rebates I'll be ok.

-XP Home w/ SP2 (Pro doesn't really seem worth the 80 bucks imo)
-Pentium M 735 CPU 1.7ghz. My question here is, can I got with the 715a to save some money and not regret it?
-14" brightview widescreen (right now it's a free upgrade, so why not?)
-Intel(R) Extreme Graphics 2 w/productivity ports
-256MB of ram. I plan to upgrade to 512 on my own plus I'll save a little now then just upgrade when the need arises.
-60GB 5400rpm HDD
-8x DVD drive. No need for CD-RW or a DVD Burner, i bearly use the cd burner I have at home so it wont get any use on the road.
-Intel's wireless mumbo jumbo...
-12 cell battery for added life. Don't care about the extra weight I'm just concerned with not having access to a plug.

Total comes out to 1099, than with the 150 instant savings I'm looking at 949 out of my pocket w/ another 50 dollar mail in rebate getting the price down the 899 total.

Good deal, is there something I should change, any suggestions in general?

TIA

Patrick

Just a few things,
If you want to game the intel graphics sux..
XP Pro is nice because you can join a domain at school... Check if your school uses a domain...

Here is what I would do:

Compaq V2000
XP Pro
P-M 715
256MB DDR333 (even tho the chipset only support 266)
60GB 5400RPM
DVD/CDRW
12-cell battery
2-year HP Express Repair extended service plan

$1209 - $150 IR - $50 MIR = $1002.99

Spend $50 for 512MB or $100 for 1GB additional RAM.

XP Pro will probably have uses for you in the future, especially if you're going to be connecting to different networks and/or remote connecting to diff machines.

Also, don't forget to order this over the phone as they do have student discounts (I've heard like 5-7% or so).

I'll never be set with this, man it's hard deciding on what to get.

Anyone else have other suggestions...basically I want wide screen, larger capacity battery, Xp Pro (?) and to try and keep it under 1000 before rebates.

I can get a Dell 6000 w/ a Pentium M 725, Media Center, 512 ram, 60 gig hd, 64m x300, wireless stuff, and the one year express warrany for 999 after rebates, and I'm sure a sale will happen to get the price down even more. Should I consider this, or look elsewhere?

Thanks.

man I have a $600 budget for a laptop(most of my budget went towards my main rig) before I go back to school, If I had your budget for a laptop I would get this compaq instead Link
you get a 64-bit AMD turion, DVD+-RW, Brightview...and all for $863 after rebates.
$863 < $1000 ------> MIssion Accomplished.
