case
dvdr/cdr
mem
motherboard
processor
video card

sound is onboard.. same with nic
i have two hard drives and another cd-rw in my old pc i will use with this...also monitor

i plan on upgrading to 1 gig of ram in the future.. but i just do not have the money right now.

am i missing anything? can i find better for cheaper? (not sure about the video card..although my friend has one and likes it.. i dunno!)

i get a lil nervous right before i am about to spend money!

case - good
dvdr - i would go for the NEC 2500A
mem- good
mobo - i would go for the Chaintech VNF3-250 over at zipzoomfly
video card - i wouldnt get that one but i cant recommend a better on (maybe a 9600 pro). i dont like the LEs

It's all good, except the mb. Why not something more mainstream and tested by the masses? And there's the soon-to-be explosion of nForce3 250gb and updated K8T800 mb's.

well.. i keep hearing how it is 'stable' and this is a pc i need to be stable(school purposes). i do not feel like working through any headaches... or i may go with the chaintech. maybe the gamble is worth it and i am being a wuss? i dunno..

ive only read nice things.. nice benchmarks.. pretty box!

i have only built 2 pc's in my past and both of them gave severre headaches.. although the headaches both came with beautiful learning experiences.

and i would love to hold out untill the new wave of nforce3 250 boards are out.. but i can not wait any longer. i am transferring to the university of iowa for the summer semester(starts early june.. which is very soon!).

am i making excuses?

which mb would you suggest?

😀

Oh ma lord, certainly NOT an SiS chipset mobo!! That will give you much more headaches.

If your insistant on socket A:

There are Abit NF-7, AN-7
ASus A7N8X
DFI Ultra Infinity
Epox 8RDA3+

They are stable (except the DFI, which are great for overclockers, probaly not for you though).

All are proven Nforce2 mobos with Soundstorm, which are great.

Btw, I would suggest STRONGLY against hte 5700LE. Its a fine card if you don't intend to do much gaming, but its really really old technology and won't run any new games good at all.

Force is right, SiS has been having all sorts of legal issues lately. I wouldn't look the them for stability.

If I wanted to jump to 64-bit RIGHT now, I'd go with the ASUS K8V-Deluxe. The K8T800 is a proven, high perf chipset AND the ASUS variant is popular (stay with the pack) and has been around long enough for a nice big shake out.

"lala?" 🙂 I knew a guy named Lala!

This should be okay, unless you plan on playing games like Far Cry.

i can see what you mean with the k8v.. how did i ever miss researching this thing? lol!

anyways.. is the extra 15 dollars for the 'deluxe se' worth it?

I'm guessing the "se" means special edition. Let me take a look.

Ehhh sorry to say but it's not a socket A motherboard with Athlon XP he's aiming for, it's an A64 with socket 754 so your suggested Mboards will not work.

Video card is SLOOOOOOOOOW, it will bottleneck the system. Get a 9600pro as absolute minimum if you plan on gameing, a 9800pro will make the system balanced.
