How does this CPU compare to its Intel Counter Part?

if i were building a new right right now and looking to spend that kind of $ i'd buy a 2500k from microcenter (or ebay if i didnt have a microcenter near me [according to microcenter's website they still sell them in-store for $180]) and p67 motherboard on ebay, then just not use the sata 2 ports.

IMO, only the under $100 AMD cpus are a great value. I'd wait it out for the Sandybridge motherboard respin or Bulldozer if you are looking to upgrade a main pc.

AMD is also a valid option if your doing something that is heavily threaded because they have the only affordable hexa-core cpus.

If you live near a Microcenter, you can get a i7 950 for $199 that smokes pretty much everything mentioned here.

i assume you say 'pretty much' since i mentioned that the SB chips can also be bought at microcenter?

I agree with you.

Get a new intel 2500 sandy bridge...

...unless AMD sells all his phenom II X whatever under 100$ then it becomes a difficult choice

Clock for Clock its not even a fair fight. Lynnfield without HT puts a beating on Denab

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/81?vs=191

Yeah it seems alot of people are slow on the uptake and just dont realize that currently AMD is competeing with core2 quads, not lynnfield, not nehalem, and definatly not SB. They are currently 2 generations behind.

Im not bashing AMD, i own 3 AMD system in my house and they serve there intended purposes just fine but they just cant compete at the $120+ CPU market. Hopefully BD will change that.

Clock for clock, definitely, but PII 920 vs. i5 760 isn't really fair in terms of price. I bought an X4 940 (a step up from the 920) for $99 a month ago, while the 760 is currently going for more than $200.

true but the similar priced phenom x6 from AMD still loses all single threaded benchmarks by large margin especially games, while winning more in multi threaded benchmarks but mostly close and some it actually loses even with 50% more cores and higher clock speed.

Or said otherwise for almost all users 760 would be better value. it's just sad and I hope BD lives up to it's hype.

Amd Phenom II x4 965 ~159$ newegg.

vs

Intel i3 560 ~149$ newegg.

http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/288/AMD_Phenom_II_X4_960T_vs_Intel_Core_i3_i3-560.html

Shows like 35 cpu intensive benchmarks ran, and has a red bar for amd cpu, and a blue one for the intel one.

Id say overall from looking at that, the Phenom II x4 is the faster of the two (stock vs stock).

Intel has faster cpus... but they cost more as well... bang for buck, Amd cpus are decent.

im sorry why are you pulling a yorkfield?

what about the i5 750's. Those will SPANK a X4.

Infact almost any new core will spank a X4.

And i7 920's can be bought for 200-250.

By price matching. It doesn't make sense to pick a more expensive chip B and say it will spank chip B. Q8400 is the closest Intel quad chip to the price of OP's X4 965 (using Newegg as OP). The i5-750 is $45 more expensive.

I wouldn't get 1156 or 1366 or AM3 right now, all of those dead ends. You are better off waiting till intel fix their boards or BD.

because you cant buy a sandy bridge now (no one is selling motherboards/cpus atm, gonna take like 9+ weeks), and its what makes most sense from intel. Unless you turn to the dark side! and get a phenom II something.

To be honest, the I7 950's I have and the 2600k, both overclocked are very similar is effective speed and cost. If you can't wait 2 months, get a 950 IMO.

SOOOOOOOOOO what you cannot buy SB its not like everything else fell off the earth. Not everyone wants SB or need it. Still plenty of socket 775 running strong not to mention 1156,1366, and plenty of darkside as you call it.

Yes Mark I agree, my 950 just does fine at 4.2 nothing new for me until IB and thats only a maybe.

I agree with this, a first gen i7 @ 4Ghz is by no means slow :)
