How does this A64 setup look?

I'm wanting to upgrade my somewhat outdated P4 2.26b @2.6ghz, Abit IT7 max 1, 512mb pc2700 w/80 +250gb WD SE 8mb 8.2krpm. Its running rather sluggish these days, time for an upgrade.

Looking to get the following:
A64 3000+ OEM
Chaintech VNF3-250 mobo
2x 512mb A-DATA ddr500 pc4000
Alpha PAL8150T heatsink w/32cfm 25db fan (trying to keep it quiet as possible)
keeping the harddrives/dvd/cdrw,/etc that I have.

I am planning to do some overclockign and hopefully get it to 2400mhz+ which I've heard is very do-able with this setup.

Any suggestions you can offer on this setup? I plan on buying everything from newegg. I do game but am upgrading mostly because when running a few apps at a time my system LAGS horribly and its very annoying. I tried adding another stick of 512mb but performance didnt improve that much...

Given that your primary complaint is bogged down multitasking I just get a 3.06ghz w/HT pop it in and overclock it. The HT will make your multitasking problem go away and you will still enjoy very good gaming performance too, just not as good as the A64.

Why? His stated reason for an upgrade is that multitasking sucks. His setup will support the 3.06 w/HT so it's a choice of paying for a whole new system that isn't the best for heavy multitasking either, or a $208 CPU that can easily reach 3.2ghz+ on his board and provide better multitasking capabilities than the A64.
 
I considered going P4 but I heard that the HT doesnt offer any noticeable improvements, is this true? And if I go with like a 2.8c (cheaper), then I'll have to buyy faster RAM anyways, and why not faster motherboard since I'am already spending like 350-400 on processor and RAM... Might as well just go A64. I'm not even sure if I can justify the upgrade since only minimal speed and multitasking increases.

I also defragged my drive last night and the system if running noticeably fast, so I may not even spend $ on the ugprade.... I dont know, what do you guys suggest?
 
Your system lagging has NOTHING to do with the setup of your current components.

It is definately a software issue. Or maybe your harddrive is about to die. Your comptuer is still top notch and going from that to the A64 would be a relatively small upgrade in terms of improvement.

I had a similar case where my computer lagged like crazy. I installed ad-aware which removed 100+ spyware components form my PC and I also defragged my system. My system ran find shortly after.

CHeck to see that you dont have a virus or background program that is taking up all your resources.

I personally like to occasionally reformat my PC. If you have easy means to backing up your data and reformatting then I highly suggest that.

But if a whole new setup is going to make you happier then definatley go for it. Do whatever makes you happy.
 
Well it was running slow before, and then I formatted about a month ago and it was still running sluggish. I think its mainly because many of the programs I run involve downloading multiple files which was lagging both processor and harddrive...

seems to be running much faster now. I dont even know if I need to upgrade now... hmm
 
HT can show substantial benefits in some multitasking areas and it's why HT chips are the favorite among distributed computing users. Also, going from 2.6ghz with a non HT chip to 3.2-3.4ghz on an HT chip would be a substantial performance increase overall. 600-800mhz clockspeed boost is nothing to scoff at!

I didn't think to ask if you were observing proper maintainance on your system though. Running ad and spyware scans, virus scans, defragging occassionally, should be second nature to the experienced PC owner. It sounds like you were just bonking due to lack of up-keep so a good maintainance is definitely the cheapest solution. Go ahead and blow the system out for dust while you're at it you slacker 😉

Anywho, I agree that you should do whatever makes you happy! However, dropping a bunch of $$$ on a new rig is an expensive solution when a $200 CPU would provide a much better price-to-performance ratio :light:
