How does the S2000 get so much HP out of a 4 cylinder?

1.) High compression (11.1:1)
2.) Astrnomical Redline (8k)

Consider that horsepower is a relationship between torque and rpm so the same torque at higher rpm = more horsepower. That's the basics of it.

An engine is a big air pump right? So the more air you move through it per combustion cycle the more power you make. Breathing (head design) is a big part of building a high-performance engine.

S2000's engine is specific to that car. Previously the Prelude had a 2.2L rated at 220hp. The new Honda 4-bangers use a completely different version of VTEC so they're really not comparable IMHO. If one must compare there's currently a 2.0L and a 2.4L both rated at 200hp (Acura RSX-Type S and Acura TSX, resp.).

revs to 9000 rpm.. must sound like paradise.. :)
i also wonder how they managed to squeese240hp from 2.0 litres and make it so reliable.. with just DOHC and variable valve timing.. no turbo, supercharger.. :Q

the new one only revs to 8k... but has a wider torque band. 9k is freakin loud even from inside... :Q

hondaboy, get your specs right, the first iterations had 9k rpm redline. :p

I never stated first or second gen, and neither did the post;) Tho, notice I edited it. I had first put up 9k for the redline;):p

The Prelude has a max HP rating of 220? I have the Prelude manual SE 2001 and it's rated at around 195-200HP. Unless the US has their own version that Canada doesn't offer? *scratches head*

The Prelude redlines at about 6500rpm I believe. Must be a really smooth engine to be able to stand redlining the S2000 to 8/9k rpm. Or just the mindset that if you're prolly revving that high, you don't give a damn about speed, just wanting to beat the car next to ya :)

It's because they use hamsters on steroids driving the spinning wheel. Other car makers have to make do with all-natural hamsters.

Yeah, it's terrible, I tell you.

I thought the Prelude revved a lot higher.. when I shift my Neon at high RPM I shift just before 6,800 (fuel cut) so the Honda has to be able to go higher than that !!!

My RSX Type-S (Acura) has a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder with 200 bhp and a 7900 rpm redline. Not exactly the same, but it's still a nice engine. :D

hp = (torque * rpm ) / 5252 (where torque = the amount of torque at the given rpm, not the max rated torque)

Honda engines have high rpm redlines. You do the math.

The last ones were rated at 220. :D
