How does the NFL handle new expansion teams?

I have been playing NFL 2K5 lately and want to start a franchise, but I want to create my own team. But it seems as though the game will allow me to choose any players from any exsisting team, that I want. Thus I could create the best team possible, but I don't want to do this, I want to make it fair. So what exactly happens with a new expansion team. I assume they likely get first round picks in the draft, but don't think that would apply to this game. They also get to somehow draft current players from exsisting teams, right? How exactly does that work, or is it free agents only?

Any other info you can provide, especially if it also pertains to them game, that would be great.

Just like in the game, real expansion teams get to pick the best players from the other teams so they can win the super bowl their first year.

If it's like other sports, they get preferred treatment in the first entry draft, and then a 'protected' draft to take players form other teams. Normally teams get to protect about half their roster for the first 'round' and then as each round goes by they can add names to the protected list. Thus there are rarely any superstars available, but almost always some very good players unprotected for at least the first few 'rounds'.

That system is used in hockey and baseball, and I believe basketball as well; I don't actually know about football though.

"Here's how the draft works: Each team has left six players exposed to the draft, and each time a player is picked, his team may then pull back an exposed player, so no more than three players can be picked from any one team. Jacksonville will pick first, and both teams must draft at least 30 players, but no more than 42"

edit... what everyone else said

Alot of times, you see aging stars with huge contracts go unprotected.

Thats it, I remember now, but since the game doesn't workt hat way, I guess I will just have to use my judgement

Yeah I was actually thinking of making a team of just above average guys, and bump the substitutions way up. So even though by the numbers my team would be average, since they would be constantly rested, they would eventually topple the better yet tired other team. But it likely won't work out that way.

As of now I am using the cowboys, I have traded from some big D guys, Zach Thomas, Charles Woodson, and a couple others. I can pretty much limit most teams to a field goal or 2 per game, but I still end up losing because my offense sucks, but mainly because I can't make my own field goals. I traded cundiff for akers, hes got good power and accuracy, but I can never seem to get the arrow pointed accurately enough.
