How does the HD limit work

So I just got a PS3 this weekend and I'm enjoying it. Got it for $280 and picked up a couple games and blu-ray movies.

I am just curious since I have installed DMC4 and GT5😛, both of which state they require 5 gigs of space. Since I have technically stored at least 10 gigs of data what happens when I hit the limit of 40. I assume I have to delete one of the games on the drive. However, that's fine I am just curious...would I lose my saved game data if I did this or would I just have to reinstall to play it again? I don't mind the latter but it would bug me if when I have to delete a game I effectively have to start over if I come back to it.

I'm also wondering this. I have the 40gb version as well that I picked up a few weeks ago. I got it mostly for the Blu-Ray player but I have rented a few games and each one installs so many GB's onto the HD but once I return the game I have no use for the data anymore.

You'll delete the saved data for the install, not your saved game progress

Also Purdue if you start running out of space you can put in basically any laptop HDD and upgrade to 200-250GB for pretty cheap. I think I actually remember seeing someone on the Playstation forums that stuffed a 320GB in there.

Your saved game files are independent of your installation files.

If upgrading is an option, you can always buy a cheap laptop drive in flavors of 80GB or higher.

How does one go around cloning their old drive...a PC, norton ghost, and a few SATA cables?

From what I read online the PS3 can copy all the files from the hard drive to another if you connect it to the PS3 via the USB port. You'll need another external drive though.

Yep and it is pretty painless. Just time consuming...... very.
