how does the haunted mansion work at Disneyland

Ok so I went to Disneyland on Sunday for the first time in 12 years. Nevermind the mind blowing fact the space mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean were closed (SM until 2005) I had a blast. More fun than I thought I would. Since I am older now than my last visit I've moved from mystical wonderment to trying to figure out how everything works. While riding on the Haunted Mansion ride we stopped in front of the mirrors that project images over your shoulder. I just figured, until then, that there were images from the other side of the mirror that moves at the same speed (on the same drive train) as the ride. When we stopped I was in front of the first, of three, mirrors and I noticed that I could see two carts in front of me by looking at the middle mirror at about a 45 degree angle. The ghost for that cart was still arranged where it should be, over the shoulder of the people in the cart. How do they do this? I know I'm missing something very easy but if what I thought happens, happened then the ghost for the third cart would have been sitting way in front of them (i.e. further down the track). Please help.

It's actually a haunted house. Disney had it moved there from Virginia, piece by piece.

Space Mountain is closed for two years while they update the ride. They are basically replacing the whole thing. It should have the same layout but some new effects will be added. Don't ask why it will take two years.

Makes sense they are remodeling SM. Less than 10 years ago it was the only "roller coaster" of all the Orlando attractions. Since Islands of Adventure opened and Sea World built Kraken, Space Mountain is kinda weak compared to the others now.

I learned about this way back in science class Freshman year of HS.

The mirrors are two-way.

On the other side of the mirror is a track, and on the track are carts that are lined up with the ones on your side. In each cart is a dummy painted with reflective paint, and lit with blacklight to glow.
Since it's dark, the dummy shows up as a translucent figure. It's just a reflection.

Same thign with the dancers. If you look closely next time you'll see that there's a big pane of glass in front of the dance hall. The actual dancing ghosts are dummies on rotating wheels right UNDER you, and you see their reflection.

The ghost still appears in the same spot at an angle because the image of the ghost/painted cart is as the same distance behind the 2 way mirror as you are from the front of the mirror. At least thats what I thought.

This thread has officially been hijacked... as far as roller coasters go Space Mountain isn't that great. Of course, there isn't a whole lot you can do indoors.

You pay an exhorbitant price for tix to the park, get gouged for a lunch of lower quality and more expensive than the airport, spend the whole day standing in line for 2 minute rides, and have to pay parking for the priveledge.

Hah, this makes me sound really awful, but I'm pretty sure the 3D Michael Jackson ride was called Captain E.O. or something like that ... We went to Disney World 2 years in a row, and it was at Epcot both times :)

Yep, Captain Eo, that's what he made me call him...

I remember Disneyland having a better Space Mountain. At DW, you could see all the track and it was weak. Did anyone ride XSTech? That was badass. Still haven't figured out what that drool at the end was. My hair was dry, but man, that felt real.
