how does the GTX 460 stack up against a 5770?

These are the two cards that I would consider getting right now (I'm still using a 9600GT!). I know a 460 is faster, but by how much and in what games? This would be with a 768MB version GTX 460

This review has them both but no minimums:

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/geforce_gtx_460_performance_preview/

From that is looks like about a 25% improvement on average. Power consumption numbers look wrong on that review also (still waiting for the xbitlabs review which seem to have the best power measuring tests). Seeing other tests that give the same or different results, or minimums?

The one advantage the HD5770 has over the GTX 460 is it's power requirement. The HD5770 only requires one 6pin connector, where the GTX 460 needs two. Personally, I was a little disappointed here, as my Dell's PSU probably can't handle the 460, while the 5770 would be no problem.

Where is Nvidia with a GTS 450 that competes well with the HD5770?

Well, I'm OK with the power supply part. Though I do appreciate an efficient card and the 5770 wins there. I think I forgot to mention this would be at 1920x1080 and usually no AA.

haven't seen mention of it in a while but what I did read about it said all the new "little" Fermis should launch between June and August. Obviously, they missed the June launch...

I'm currently using an oem-pulled GTX 260 "green" in my Dell (along with a Q6600) and I play at 1080p with no problems. The HD5770 would be a little faster than my GTX 260.

that would have to be a very underclocked gtx260 to get beat by a 5770.

molex to 6pin adapter?

or do you mean your psu doens't have enough juice?

192 cores instead of 216, and the clock speed IIRC is in the lower 500's. It only needs one 6pin connector. It's only other plus is that it has 1792MB memory.

Probably both would be a problem. Since Dell went SATA only, a lot of their models lack 4pin molex connectors, and this may be the case with me, I'd need to look. But the PSU is a 375W with dual 12V @ 18A.

so its a butchered low clocked gtx260 with only one 6 pin connector yet they stuck on 1792mb of vram? that seems a bit counter productive to the other power saving measures. lol

the reason for the 1792mb of ram is that most game say "must have a video card with a minimum of X ram", and people come to believe that ram amount is indicative of the speed of their video card. Not helped by unscrupulous salesmen at brick and mortar stores. I have seen plenty of ignorant people being sold vastly inferior cards on the premise that they are better than a super card because they have more ram.

Adding tons of ram to a crap card is easy and cheap, and lets you really milk the ignorant.

75% faster minimums for the gtx 460 over the 5770 @ 1900x1080

yeah I certainly know all that. I was just saying its odd that the card has all those power saving "features" yest uses twice the ram which will in turn use more power.

Yup. I snagged it because it was essentially the fastest Nvidia based card that would run in my Dell, and because I could get it very inexpensively. That's ok though, it does the job.

I betcha that gtx 260 core will do 700. It should beat a 5770 by far.

it only has ONE 6pin connector so the voltage is probably set too low to allow that. basically that card is not designed to really allow overclocking from the looks of it.

The HD 5770 was always kind of weaksauce in the midrange category (given its current generation standing), but since there was absolutely no alternatives people constantly heaped praise on it and recommended it (myself included). Now that there is a cool, quiet, reasonably power efficient midrange that actually beats its predecessor (GTX 260) I can't see buying and HD 5770. Its worth the $40 more for the Nvidia.

a gtx460 is barely faster than the gtx260 unless using lots of AA and they both use about the same amount of power under load. the gtx460 only looks good because we have had such crappy bang for buck cards this entire generation.

exactly... there is just no justification to buying a current gen card. I am sticking to my GTX260 for now thank you very much.

The anandtech review shows the GTX460 slaughtering the 5770 in basically every game. However, when you consider you can get a 1GB 5770 for $130 fairly regularly... against $200, they're almost dead-even price/performance. Anandtech's power review shows the 460 doing pretty well compared to the 5770 too, actually.

You're absolutely right. Still, I'll take a 20% improvement (GTX 260 vs. GTX 460 768mb) vs. a slightly slower card (HD 5770 vs. HD 4870 1GB) or a quite slower card (HD 5770 vs. HD 4890). Yeah, this current gen is disappointing overall.

But he needs it for 1920x1080. Would anyone honestly recommend a 5770 for that resolution unless the OP could not spend $200?

Depends on the games. Lots of new games will run fine at that resolution and max settings.
