How does the GeForce 8400M GS actually perform?

With the specs of the Dell XPS m1330 revealed, and because of its sleek design, I've really suddenly began to consider buying one of these notebooks later this year. The optional GeForce 8400M GS video card is looking very good as an upgrade over integrated graphics, but I want to know how it actually performs. What kinds of games could I play, and at what settings, on this video card at the native resolution of this notebook's screen (assumed to be 1280 x 800)? Are there any benchmarks available, and how does it compare to my desktop's 6600 GT? I've been having trouble finding anything.

Also, do we know when the m1330 may be released?

Thanks.

From the preliminary reading I've been doing, it is better than a 7400Go, but not as a good a 7600Go. Another words, it should score somewhere 1000 and 2100 on 3dMark06.

That's what I was looking for! The nice specific range of 1000 to 2100. ;)

But do any real benchmarks exist on the World Wide Web? I'm not interested in theoretical performance from simlulated tests.

One of the resellers that post in the Asus forum is working on some reviews of the various DX10 notebooks that Asus put out, including notebooks with the 8400M graphics series chip, and the 8600M graphics series, so expect that within a week or two. (A8Jsc, F3Sc, F3Sv (8600M GS)).

Ah, thanks. I'll look forward to that.

It just seems to me like there should be more performance analyses available by now. I understand that testing video cards on a notebook is not nearly as simple as dropping a new video card into a desktop and all, but I'd still like more people and publications to get on it soon...

I think not a single person on this forum can tell you how durable a notebook is unless they owned one in the same series. a8js for example. It is definitely a mediocre line from asus. A8js had no inherent issues. The screen on a8sc is only wxga but does not suffer from the same poor view angles as any wxga+ display such as a8js. I had a chance to review it. 3dmark 06 came in just over 1000 points. its about 3 times less then a 8600GT found in the g1s however you can still play many games on it. @ 1200$ i think its a pretty decent deal. It becomes an incredible deal becuase there is not a single manuf out there that can offer better then asus standard 2yr warranty, 2way overnight shipment, and 24/7 DOMESTIC support

I don't think there are many formal reviews on it yet though. The Dell XPS M1330 could be different though (clock speeds, better drivers, etc). The good thing with the 8400M GS is you get the ability to play games (maybe not on their highest settings), but you can still play them and you also get decent battery life at the same time.

My indication is that the 8400M will perform somewhat better than Go 7400, and give you DX10. That's enough for me.

You're only going to get so much in a 12 or 13" lappy graphics-wise.

Try looking at the reviews on NotebookReview.com. Different manufacturers clock their cards at different speeds.

Here are the 3dMark05 comparison:

Dell XPS M1330 (2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7300, NVIDIA GeForce Go 8400M GS) 3,079 3DMarks
HP Compaq 6510b (2.20GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7500, Intel X3100) 916 3DMarks

It plays games on medium or low... What do you want from a cheap part like that? And why did someone necro this thread anyway?
