How does the Accord/Camry outsell the Maxima?

OK, all brand loyalty and bias aside...
I'm back home for Spring break (away from Hicksville upstate NY) and I'm doing some driving around Queens, LI and Jersey and for every Accord or Camry I see on the road, I must see at least 5 Maxima's, no exaggeration.

So I'm thinking, how is it that the Maxima's are selling far less than Camcords?
Even the new Altima sells better than the Maxima and I've only seen a few of those around.

If you drove around the NY Metro area, you would get the feeling that Maxima's are the #1 selling vehicle in America.
It's obvious that total numbers around the US are taken into account, but you would think that Maxima's sell better than their numbers indicate.

honestly, i rarely see the newest generation maximas. I would saw i see BMW 740's more often. I do a see a TON of Azteks, though. It probably has something to do with the fact that i live in metro detroit.

I did see the new Cadillac Cien on the road last friday. Also, i saw a new Grand Am with manufacturers plates. it had a different front and rear fascia, new siede skirts, different exhaust pipes, and a dual scoop hood. It was in metallic orange. A VERY nice color. I get to see lots of cars not available to the public yet 🙂

<< Maybe cause Maxima cost more and it's more expensive to get it fix >>

Not to mention the frequency of repairs.

My mom had a maxima that would go through a tranny every year

Simple: How many 10-15 year old Maximas do you see driving around? Compare that to the number or 10-15 year old Accords and Maximas. Not to mention, Maximas are more expensive to maintain then the other two and I think in general Nissian doesn't have a good a reputation as Honda/Toyota. For instance, I have a hunch that many people upgrade from a Civic/Corolla to an Accord/Camry because they liked their cars. Sentras have basically sucked until recently and even now I don't see too many new Sentras on the road.

1) Price. A mid trim Honda Accord LX or Toyota Camry LE probably costs less than a comparably equipped Nissan Maxima.

2) Reliability. Nissan has made huge strides in build quality and reliability but still are eating Toyota and Honda's dust. Like NutBucket asked, how many 10-15 year old Nissan Maxima's do you see around? I do see a few late 80's Nissan Maxima's around, far more than their Ford/Chevy counterparts.

3) Market. The Toyota Camry and Honda Accord have captured the "bread & butter" market. The Nissan Maxima is a performance sports sedan which gives you maximum bang for your buck but what's most important to people is price and reliability/quality.

It's a regional thing. Driving around the Seattle area, you'd get the feeling that Subaru's are the #1 selling vehicle in America. Hell, I drive one. 🙂

Yeah, I figured it was a regional thing.
Can I get some NY metro peeps to give me their input?

but those darn civics, they're all over the place too... and the accords too.
I actually see more accords than camry's.
2003 camry's are a rare sight, and that's a good thing... they're hideous 😛

I'll tell you why. The A/C in the Accord and Camry works, Maxima's (at least last generation) puts out lukewarm air at best. The controls (turn signal, wiper/washer switch, radio controls) on the Maxima have little to no tactile feedback, whereas the controls in my 14 year old Accord still operate with precision. The switchgear for the automatic transmission in the Maxima has a tendency to get hung up and not want to leave Park, no such truoble with the Accord. The Maxima has a great drivetrain and chassis. Aside from that, it's far bested by Honda and Toyota. I far prefer long trips in an Accord or a Camry.

Marketing.

about 8 years ago, the maxima was positioned as an upscale sports sedan, the camry and accord were positioned as family sedans. even tho the camry and accord moved to the exact same type of vehicle as the maxima they aren't perceived that way (i know majority of consumers are idiots).

nissan also struggled for about 4 yrs. they went from being one of the hottest car companies (in the 80's) to worst car companies during the 90's. look it up. their sales went to pot. they struggled with quality control. their models were always a few years behind, even the latest reincarnation of the maxima came out about 3 yrs too late. the model before had to go against some pretty nice camry's and accords. the maxima was just outclassed then.

Nissan has just started making a comeback. the new SUV, the Altima, the Sentra. nice models. but it will take some time. they will come out w/ a new maxima here very soon also.

You need to compare maxima sales not to all camcord sales, but camcord v6 sales. Maxima only comes in V6, so people buying I4 camcords don't crossshop them with maxima. Alternatively, you could compare Maxima+Altima sales to Camcord sales.
