How does speedfan work exactly?

Hi all,

I'd like to use speedfan to bring the noise level down a bit. I can use the fan-only molex from the PSU to run all fans at lower speeds except for two. For those, I need to "hand-start" them so doesn't seem practical. They both have molex power with a yellow wire that goes into a 3-pin (I guess for rpm sensing).

So my question: Does speedfan basically step down the voltage through the MB? (I *think* my MB works with speedfan.) So would it be possible to splice the two lines off the 4-pin molex into the 3-pin and just use only the 3-pin on the MB header?

These things seem to be something a noob would ask, but I couldn't find any noob guides online. Some suggestions for resource info would be appreciated. :)

For me, it works very well. There still is some bugs for some chip sets. Mine doesn't report all voltages correctly. Your best bet would be to go to speedfans site here and ask your detailed questions to Alfredo, the author.

Thanks for the suggestion. Since my MB supports fan control anyway, I've decided to do a little soldering work and convert my 4-pin molex fans to 3-pin (molex 2510) so I can use my bios features and avoid going out and replacing all my fans.

Navigating the world of itty-bitty electronics parts landed me here with the perfect match!
