How does Re-installing Windows work? (98se)

I'm thinking of reinstalling windows98se, because of this stupid problem I'm having w/ my windows explorer. So if just pop in my CD and run setup, will that do it? will I lose my registry, installed programs, and everything else?

Normally I just throw all my data on one hard drive and then do a format/install on the other drive. But not everyone has two hard drives, which makes it harder.

The way I used to do it in my win98se days goes like this..
Make a startup disk or if your motherboard supports it change your bios to cdrom, c, a Your win98 cd shoud be bootable
Delete the windows directory. I usually do this from a dos prompt from the boot disc. I believe the command c: deltree windows
then type in "cd x" x being the drive letter of your cdrom. type "dir" look for file named (setup) if this file is present you are in the right drive.
Type in setup and let it roll.. If you changed boot sequence in the bios of your mb just install win98 disc and remove floppy and reboot..
install will begin...
You will have to reinstall your programs.. right over your old installs no data will be lost... the reinstall is just to reconstruct a clean registery.
This usually results in a noticeably faster machine. not all your favs will be lost save em somewhere on you harddrive.. its easier than typeing them in again 🙂
Some one will prolly come up with a better method but this one has held me in good stead for a number of years.
Doh the command c😀eltree windows showed up like this HEHE!

There are various options. I have done it numerous times. From the description of your problem though, it sounds like you need a clean install. (I think I may be doing the same thing on my father-in-laws machine tonight due to problems with IE.) You really don't need to redo your hard drive, but you do need to get rid of everything related to the windows installation. The easiest way, as a previous post suggested, is to delete the windows directory. If there is anything in there you need, obviously save it beforehand. Like mail files or favorites which you can restore into your new installation after. "DELTREE WINDOWS" should do it. It will take a while and you need to boot to safe mode command prompt only to do this using the F8 key. Then you can boot your system from the CD and do a new install. Make sure it goes into the C:\Windows directory when you get to that point in the install process. When you are done, you will have a bunch of old programs left on your machine which are basically useless. You can weed and prune them out, which is probably the best option, or install another install on top of the left over installation. But it isn't a real huge deal and does give a very nice performing machine afterward. Once you are done, if you have a nice high speed internet connection, bring all of your hardware drivers up to the latest and then go to Microsofts update site and bring windows up to date. Have fun, you do have a bit or work ahead of you.

A note of caution: Do not leave any of the old windows on the machine, a new install over an existing windows or even on a machine with windows in a renamed directory usually carries over the registry with it and the source of your problems is probably in the registry. You need to make sure all remnants of the registry are gone.

Before I did a clean install I'd just reload 98SE over itself.

Just follow the prompts and accept the suggestions. It will re-install itself with all devices set just as before.

If that fails, you've only wasted 20 minutes.
