How does one go about getting a job with Microsoft or any other blue chip software co?

I decided that I need to work for a big software co. Not gonna go into details why, unless people are really interested. Anyways, all the big companies have their only job search engines and ways of applying. However, I realize that millions apply for those jobs and my resume will simply get lost (i tried nevertheless). Unfortunately, I don't know anybody who works for one of those companies. Do I have any other options?
