How does one do a fresh install of Windows98SE with a SCSI cdrom? Can't remember what to type?

This is the first time I've tried fresh installing windows 98SE with a SCSI cd-rom. In the past I just had to deal with the simplicity of ATAPI cdrom, whicjh was taken care of by drivers auto loaded when booting up the start-up disk. I would normally come to the A:\ prompt after both FDISK'ing and Formatting, and type D:\ "enter" -> at the D prompt type "setup" and I'd be on my way.

But now things are obviously different. I need to access the PCI channel so I can access the SCSI cd-rom through the SCSI adapter. Do I know I have to choose start the windows setup WITHOUT CD-rom support (only IDE), and I know I have to type in a command at the A:\ something like D:\setup P\C to access the scsi cdrom...but I just don't know exactly what it is.

I'm sure some of you know how to do this with your eyes closed, so help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance guys. I should really know how to do this, and I feel embarrased even asking. Any input or direction would be great. Laterz

If you have a Win98 bootdisk, it should automatically load the drivers for a SCSI hard drive when booting to it. I believe that the 98 bootdisk will first attempt to load the IDE drivers, but if it detects a SCSI CDROM, it will instead load the drivers for it. You will then be able to finish booting, switch to the drive the bootdisk set as your CDROM drive (usually either D: or E: depending on the hard drives and partitions you have set up), and then run setup from there.

Hope this helps!

What JW310 said was the way it worked for me. I was a bit concerned when it "looked" like it didn't load the drivers, but they were the ide.....I guess I missed the SCSI drivers loading. I have a buslogic SCSI card and Plextors.

If it's a newer Adaptec card just read the manual it tells you what to do. Bascially you'll need to copy over the newer scsi drivers to the Windows boot disk. You will need the Windows boot disk BTW.

Hey...thanks for the reply...but unfortunately it did not work when I tried earlier. I have a Tekram SCSI adapter/Plextor 32X Ultraplex SCSI2, and it seems like the ACPI drivers load when using the Win98 boot disk, but when I go the E:\ prompt, there is no valid drive. The D:\ is where ramdrive loaded, thus pushing the cdrom up 1 letter. I have only 1 harddrive(1partition) and one cdrom. I can't figure it out. I have a feeling I have to load drivers provided by tekram, but it is not straightforward.

So any more help would be great as I still am unable to load windows. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for that last reply ... sounds like i should copy some tekram scsi drivers to the Win98 boot up disk. Which driver should I use? Is it an ACPI driver? I don't have any manuals to refer to, pretty stupid hey. Any other advice while I go try copying the updated tekram driver to the win98.

damn...the floppy drive on the backup computer is dead...ahhh...what am i going to do? I'm awaiting an IDE CDRW which should arrive on Monday or Tuesday, so I guess I'll just wait till then. Or perhaps I'll just take the disks over to a friends tomorrow and get the tekram ACPI driver on the Win98 boot up. Sound good?

Thanks for the help.

You will also have to edit your config.sys file on your boot floppy.
For the Tekram, after adding Aspiuwf.sys & Trmcd.sys to your bootdisk.
Edit your config.sys so that under [CD] it says

device=himem.sys /testmem:eek:ff
device=Aspiuwf.sys
device=Trmcd.sys /D:mscd001
