How does one buy a bed?

Thread title says it all. Give me tips, tricks and suggestions on buying a bed (mattress/box spring).

go to a furniture store, lay on some, find which ones you like the best (soft, firm, pilow top,e tc) take the info on the bed (model, model number, name, etc) go home and research prices and opinions on the internet, find the best price in your area then buy it. Have it delivered (for a price, sometimes its free) and enjoy.
Its even better if you know someone who works at a furniuture store to get a discount with.

Go to any matress store like - Mattress Firm

look up a nice firm matress with pillow top (thickness whichever you like...)

look for the one with the maximim number of springs in it - that will give you a nice support

remember you can get it out of the store at 75% of the lowest (sale) sticker price.

I like Simmons the best - Sealy is also good. Any mattress store will have them. Furniture stores will have limited selection at higher prices

So, if you were on the internet, and someone solicited your opinion on different brands, what would you tell them? Which brand would you consider to be the best? Does brand make much of a difference? Is a $2000 mattress set really that much better than a $200 mattress set? In your opinion, do you know anyone in the furniture business in the Boston area?

Go to a store that sells mattresses and see which ones feel most comfortable. Read some reviews on those ones before making a purchase. Really cheap mattresses won't last very long before they start to sag. I believe that there are some online methods of purchasing that save a lot of money.

Try Select Comfort. I am going to get one of these babies as my next bed. No springs, no pressure. Felt like floating on a cloud. Adjustable too, so you can change the firmness depending on your body condition, etc. I heard it's great for women planning on having babies and people with back problems as you can adjust the firmness.

Desi to Desi - believe me there is a heck lot of difference between 200 and 2000 $ once - dont go for cheap go for good descent ones. read my 1st post you can get a good one for 600 - 700 $s

The rule of thumb I go with when buying mattress is buy hard ones. Even though soft ones might feel comfortable to lay on for a short while, it'll kill your back sleeping on it. Also, since you've never slept on a bed before, I'm assuming you slept on the floor, so a harder mattress will probably feel right to you anyways.

We got a king size Sealy set from Costco for around $700. We've had it about 4 years and it's extremely comfortable.

Matress shopping is a pain any way you do it I think. The way mattresses are named makes it extremely difficult to comparison shop. Often the same line is named differently at different stores. You just have to figure out what your tastes are. Wear some really comfortable cloths, clean socks and take your time rolling around on on contenders. Something without belts or pockets would be the way to go.

I was set on a Sterns and Foster firm pillow top (premium line of Serta I think) but setteled with a Tempur Pedic Rapsody. I was pretty set against foam mattresses but the wife was really into the feel. That particular model hit the spot for both of us. We upgraded our bed frame to a king size at the same time

All you can do is go to the store and lay on different mattresses. I hate to put a pricepoint, but I think you need to spend at least 700-800 dollars for the mattress+box spring, or you will be getting something crappy.
